We had the good fortune of connecting with Marilyn Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marilyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process was why work 40 hours a week for someone when I can do that for myself.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have a candle business all hand-poured by me. I created my own scents and my own logo. You will notice in my logo there is a lotus, a lotus can mean so many different things but it’s really known for growing in the mud and growing into this beautiful flower.
I am proud that I was able to create something that represents who I am. Although I may go through trials and tribulations in life like many, I’m still able to grow through the mud.
When I first started my business, it was a hot mess, literally. Although the trial and errors were difficult starting off, there wasn’t a moment that I didn’t want to quit. I found something that I love to do, I found something that I was able to create and share with others. When I make my candles I make it with so much love that translates to positivity, I like to think when you light my candle at home that’s what you’re filled with.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My desire to become an entrepreneur developed after feeling unfulfilled, while working in corporate America for over sixteen years. I knew that wasn’t the way I was going to create generational wealth for my children. I knew I had a bigger purpose, so I took a leap of faith.
When you light a candle, the smoke rises. Rise means to move from a lower position to a higher one. I want everyone to rise above their adversities and overcome all obstacles they are faced with.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First off to drink, mimosas every morning to start the day, lol, just kidding…or not.
I would take my friend to piedmont park to walk around because the views are just breathtaking. If it’s a Wednesday we would go to centennial park for Wine Dine Wednesday.
A casual dinner we would go to my favorite spot Red Pepper.
For Brunch without a doubt, Milk & Honey because the biscuits are to die for.
While in Atlanta you must visit the Aquarium the Coca-Cola factory to get your sugar rush.
But if you’re more into history you must must visit Dr. Martin Luther Kings home & the National Center for Civil and Human Rights
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my boys Brendyn, Keidyn, Rome & Reign; those days where I’m too tired or I want to give up I remember that they’re always watching so I have to keep pushing. As a Mother it is my duty to teach my boys you have to hustle for what you want and to never give up despite life getting in the way. .
