We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marissa, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
After graduating from my Master’s program, I moved back home to Chicago from Arkansas. I didn’t have a job set up or plan in place. I thought to myself, I have this degree but I’m living at home with my mom and it’s difficult for me to find a job in my field of Public Health. Fast forward to today, I’m a Doctor of Public Health working at one of the premiere public health agencies in the world! I attribute part of this to the book entitled “The Secret” by Rhonda Burns. For me, it was a self-improvement book that helped me to not only change my mindset but in turn, my life! I now do my best to keep a positive mindset and give gratitude daily knowing that I am the creator of my own reality.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been largely focused on my educational mobility and career in Public Health but I’m finally in the process of kicking off my love for fashion/styling with an online boutique/style consultant brand. People have always loved my style and asked for fashion advice or assistance with shopping. Honestly, the fear of failure and success has held me back from starting my boutique. I am overcoming this fear through therapy and knowledge; doing my research, reading books, and leaning on my faith has prepared me to take the leap. There will be more to come on this boutique I plan to launch in 2022. In the meantime, I’ve started my YouTube channel/IG brand page for Dr. FashionistaNaturalista that combines my love for fashion, hair, and health. I’ve always been passionate about helping people and now I’m just finding more creative ways to
do so outside of my career. It hasn’t been easy becoming a Doctor or pursuing my dreams but hard work pays off! One lesson I’ve learned is that motivation isn’t enough, discipline will get you farther because that’s what you need to consistently put forth the effort. Be kind, be a good person, be grateful and that will get you far as well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve lived in Atlanta less than a year and half but I love good food and ambiance. A couple of my favorite brunch spots are Toast on Lenox and Breakfast at Barney’s. A good rooftop would be the Roof at Ponce City Market (fun and good views of the city). I recently discovered the beltline for various activities. I like to go to Piedmont park for fresh air. And if you’re looking for a night time spot, I’d recommend Pasha or Xperience Sports Bar. If you love live music, candlelight at city winery and St. James Live are the places to be.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to God, my mother, Youlanda, and all my loved ones that have supported me and prayed for me along the way. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
