We had the good fortune of connecting with S. Michelle Foye MBA, PMP, CSM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi S. Michelle, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would have to say that my faith in God is a factor, because He led me to launch this business in honor of my son, Demonde “DJ” Dicks, Jr., who was killed. The other important factor is the support that comes from my Husband, and children.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a 22-year Corporate Technology veteran whose career began with the Gas Company here in Atlanta just before natural gas deregulated. I began as an Office Assistant and moved lattice style into mission-critical senior leadership roles within organizations and across industries such as SunTrust Banks, Cap Gemini, Accenture, Cox and healthcare giants such as Morehouse School of Medicine, Piedmont and Grady. I leveraged my corporate knowledge gained over the years to start my own business in Drug Testing and Waived Laboratory Testing. Drug Testing was chosen due to the oldest son’s murder, which was drug and gang violence related.
The road has certainly not been smooth, but I haven’t expected it to be. I believe that businesses thrive and are sustainable by responding accordingly to opportunities. Opportunities are real problems that need resolution. Specifically, some struggles that I have witnessed are the proverbial sexism and racism, but they also have everything to do with knowledge. Every business will struggle with resources at some point, whether it is financial, human or otherwise. The answer to the problem is knowledge. I have been fortunate to attend events where I meet someone that leads to another someone. These meetings always create an opportunity for me to gain more knowledge to become better as an entrepreneur. I want to recognize John Hope Bryant and Operations Hope for their Entrepreneurship program that I attended in June 2019.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Monday – Botanical Gardens, Dinner at Low country, Chef G. Garvin’s Restaurant Tuesday – Martin Luther King exhibit, Dinner at STK Steak House.
Wednesday – World of Coca-Cola, Dinner at Old Lady Gang Southern Cuisine.
Thursday – Georgia Aquarium – Lunch at Mary Mac’s Tea Room.
Friday – Spa Day at Waldorf Astoria Spa, Dinner at Ray’s in The City.
Saturday – Shopping at Phipps Plaza, Dinner prepared by my husband at our home.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In addition to my Husband and children, I would especially like to thank my team. They believe in my vision and are loyal and patient with me. I could not do it without them.
