Meet Shani H. | Founder and Owner of Grace & Black

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shani H. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shani, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
This is such a good question. I’ve always dreamed of creating and operating a business. Since I was a child, I have always had a deep love for music and fashion. Some of my most cherished moments were waking up on Sundays to music and getting dressed in my Sunday best. It’s something about when you look good you feel good. I also remember spending countless hours in stores shopping with my ma and grandma who exuded so much style and grace. Although they shopped for great deals, their ability to find timeless, flattering, and quality pieces that could transition from day to night, season to season, and year to year was amazing.

However, as I started to transition into roles and jobs that required more business casual attire, I started to feel like my desire for a polished look was becoming a challenge. I would go into stores and feel a level of disappointment whether it was due to the price point or the trends at the time. That challenge and disappointment fueled my thought process of creating a business that would feel like a dream closet of clothes for women.

What should our readers know about your business?
Grace & Black is an influential lifestyle fashion line and online boutique. Our collection is a blend of signature statements and elegant pieces for a more stylish and polished look. In addition to our stylish and quality products offered, Grace & Black prides itself on providing a culture that speaks to perseverance and faith and we use our platforms to inspire and aid others wherever they are on their life’s journey. We also take heart in providing exceptional customer service and trust that you can have a great and professional shopping experience.

Were most excited about our future. Great things are constantly happening within the business and were just excited to still be on this journey growing and thriving. New arrivals being added always add an extra level of excitement to our days, so we’re looking forward to that. With that being said, we are working on a more high-end collection to add and we believe that people will absolutely love this new collection.

We are where we are today because we kept hope alive. To have an idea of starting a business is one thing, but to bring it to life is another thing. You really must be self-motivated, determined, passionate, and you must give permission to extend grace to yourself often.

This journey of growing this business and brand has been far from easy. We not only launched during a Pandemic, but we were able to sustain. We not only launched during a Pandemic, but we were able to sustain. Although, most of how we overcame that just came from trusting what we had to offer and pivoting in ways that allowed us to engage more on social media platforms.

Some of the lessons I have learned along the way was to believe in myself, the ideas, and the ability to execute them. I’ve lost time and money because I didn’t feel I was equipped to do things I knew I could do.

One thing I want people to know is that I’ve been inspired by so many, and I pride myself on being that inspiration for others whether it’s on a personal or professional level.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many great places in and around Atlanta. The Battery Atlanta at Truist Park is a great spot. It features great scenic views, dining spots, retail shops, and entertainment. There’s also a fun place that I like to gather with friends that is called Punch Bowl Social. The Battery even has a great place for a great staycation at the Omni Hotel. This destination is great for date night, family night, or just for a social outing with friends.

The Ponce City Market is another great spot. You can get great dining, play, entertainment, and shopping all in one area. They offer many events weekly that you can attend as well. I suggest checking out these spots if you are visiting the Atlanta area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This may not come by surprise, but I want to recognize my family, especially my late mother and grandmother. Glenda H. (mother) and Millie B. (grandmother) who truly embodied style and grace. In addition, they were businesswomen, creatives, and my biggest cheerleaders. Before the thought of a business or any success story of mine, they taught me to dream and believe big. They also showed me what it means to be resilient, and I am grateful to have gained such a superpower.

I also want to take the time to highlight my siblings, their support is incredible, and I am extremely proud of the work they are too doing. Next, I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to my aunt for her love and support.
