We had the good fortune of connecting with Augusta Wheeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Augusta, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk is a key component to being successful. Without risk you really can’t expand your mind. I like to do everything flying by the seat of my pants. Put it all out there…I find it always better when you just jump and a take that leap of faith. No one is going to love everything you do. So as long as you do everything with confidence, you’re golden!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been a little…let’s say quirky. My design atheistic isn’t for everyone. But when you see it, it stops you and that’s what I love. What I enjoy most about art is there are no rules. I set myself apart because I don’t follow trends. If I see a specific piece I adore, I just go for it. It doesn’t have to match in any way, shape or form. I suppose if you just look at your space as a gigantic piece of artwork it can be pretty liberating. I started doing design for fun. I started posting on social media different spaces in my home or projects I was working on. Within a couple years I had write ups and organically grew my following to almost 30k but lost it all during the pandemic to a hacker. That was a big blow for sure. Hurt more than I expected but it brought me back to reality. Social media can be kind of mundane when your constantly having to post and engage. It gave me more time with my beautiful kids and made me say “hmmm is it really that important ?” So for that I’m grateful. I haven’t been putting in as much effort lately on the gram. Sometimes you just have to take a step back and recollect your vision.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were to come to Atlanta and go to the extra fun spots I’d likely do as follows; Brunch at Folk Art (the grilled cheese and tomato soup is KILLER)
A stroll through Grant Park farmers market on a Sunday for fresh flowers from Chattahoochee Queen.
Late night drinks at The Yacht Club (L5P)
Then head to East Atlanta to have the best late night lobster roll at Octopus Bar.
BOOM!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Having a support system is a huge part of my life. As a single mom, I’ve had my challenges but I could not get though my day to day without my village of friends and my family!
