We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Manderson (aka Da Fingaz) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcus, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Marrying my wife. 🙂

Marrying someone who is very supportive of my business and music.

Someone willing to tell me when something I make or a business decision isn’t right.

It also helps that she’s a travel agent. She knows where to find the best flight and hotel deals (if anyone needs a travel agent, let me know 🙂).

I couldn’t imagine how difficult things would be without having the support of her and my family in my music and business efforts.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a music producer and composer. Also, as a musician (piano, synths, organ, etc) I can bring the “live” instrument element to my music creations.

What I’m most proud of right now is building up my brand and business.

Just this year, I launched a website, started a newsletter, launched a course on remix contests, and started selling sample packs for music creators.

To get to that place today, I studied, and continue to study, how various people, companies, and businesses work.

Building up a business is not easy. Sometimes fun. Sometimes challenging. To overcome the challenges, I just think about what running a successful business will mean for me, my family, and my brand.

Here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way:

– While everyone may not be able to use your services, everyone may know someone who could use your services

– Aligning with the right people, communities, and environments can open up so many doors and opportunities

– Spending 1 day or having 1 conversation with a key contact could bring you knowledge and a perspective that spending 4 years in college might not ever bring you (school is cool though! LOL)

What I want the world to know about my story is that music is my passion and I will continue to make music for as long as I can. Hopefully it will impact the world. If not, hopefully it will at least impact 3 worlds (my wife and our 2 kids).

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in the DMV there’s a lot to do, even in the middle of a pandemic.

There are plenty of “old town” areas that you could spend a nice night just walking along the streets. Such as Occoquan, Manassas, and Alexandria.

There are unique spots in DC, such as axe throwing spots. Top Golf is always a winner. Bowling at Uptown Alley. Movies, specifically at a theater with reclining seats (if a good movie is out).

Museums (if they are open).

There’s also the simple things. Visiting and spending time with family and friends. Going out to eat. Sitting back and watching a movie at home.

Sometimes, the best spot is just the living room with the closest people in your circle.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The ultimate recognition goes to my family. Specifically my wife and our 2 kids who continue to support me every step of the way.

Telling me what songs and beats they really like and the ones they don’t like.

Giving me music ideas to work on. Telling me when I need to delete a beat 😂.

The support goes beyond to our extended family as well.

Outside of family, there is an increasing list of music producer, audio engineers, musicians, songwriters, artists, and business entrepreneurs who have helped me along the way. I couldn’t begin to list all of them here, but they know who they are.

Thank you all!
