We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaylan Mary and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaylan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve been in the entertainment industry since I was 9 years old. I’ve been blessed with many opportunities as a singer, actress and dancer to showcase my talents all over the world. Now that I’m entering adulthood, I’m learning the importance of not limiting myself to only being an entertainer, but exploring more avenues in the industry that I might actually be good at. This decision led me to realizing that I have a passion for songwriting, photography, and creative direction. I knew that starting my own production company would allow me to do all the things that I love. So on top of being a full time music artist, songwriter, and actress, I am the CEO and founder of my own production company, Kaylan Mary Productions, and I’m so proud of all that I’ve been able to accomplish as a new entrepreneur.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a music artist, songwriter, actress, and now business owner.
What sets me apart is my work ethic. Ever since I made the decision at 9 years old to pursue a career in entertainment, I made sure I put the work in to make sure I was the best at my craft. I had to make many sacrifices in the name of my career. I did not have a normal childhood growing up because all my time was spent in rehearsals, artist development, in the studio, doing photoshoots and music videos, going on tour, being on set, etc. I did this because I love what I do! The process wasn’t easy. I’ve heard a lot of “no’s”, but I never gave up. All those sacrifices paid off, and I have truly been able to live my dreams because of it.
This same work ethic applies to my business. Because I’ve been in the entertainment industry for so long, I can now apply what I’ve learned/ what I’m learning to my clients to help bring out their vision. When I have a passion for something, I work tirelessly to make sure that I present quality to the world. I have a passion for creating, so anything that I have a hand in creating will always have my heart and soul in it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA.
For breakfast, it’s a must to eat at Waffle House, Here in Atlanta, there’s a Waffle House on every corner. After breakfast, we’ll probably head downtown. There’s a lot of culture in the city of Atlanta. Not only would we be able to see monumental places like Martin Luther King Jr’s house, but a lot of creative spaces are located downtown. Here is where you’d find lots of creatives; artists, models, photographers, etc.
We’d have to visit T.I’s Trap Music Museum, an interactive experience that has art showcased to celebrate the history of Trap Music, a genre that originated in Atlanta.
We’d also have to visit Tyler Perry Studios, which is the largest film production studio in the United States.
We’d probably head to Buckhead and go to Lenox Mall for some shopping. We’d also look at some of the homes in North Atlanta because they tend to be super big homes. Lots of celebrities live in Buckhead also.
Downtown College Park has amazing black owned restaurants that we’d be able to get more food at. The possibilities are truly endless.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to God, because he has blessed me with my gifts and talents as well as the opportunities to be able to do what I love. I also want to shout out my family for all their sacrifices and support that has led me to be where I am today. I want to shoutout my clients, past, present, and future, for believing in me and taking a chance with my company. And lastly, I want to shout out every single person that has helped me along the way. Whether big or small, you’ve impacted my life in some way and I am forever grateful for the village that contributed to my success.
