We had the good fortune of connecting with John Wetmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I get asked about balance when building a business literally every week. My answer is always, there will be none if you want to build something major, and fast.
One of the mistakes I see often is people want balance while they’re at the early stages of building their business. Meaning if they’re busy Monday morning they want balance Monday evening.
I get balance today, from the times I was working 20 hour days for several years starting in 2013. I had no balance then, but today my wife and I get to drop our kids off to school together and pick them up together every day because we sacrificed for a few years early in the business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started in the Life Insurance business back in August of 2012 as a part time agent, while I had a full time job as an accountant. I had never done any kind of in home sales before l, never worked leads or dialed to book appointments so I was extremely intimidated when I started.
I was 35 years old, had 5 kids and had previously been through a divorce, bankruptcy, foreclosed on 2 homes and had a car repo’d. I was tired of being broke and life insurance was a platform to get me out!
I was terrible at the beginning, I wasn’t good with people and I had zero sales skills. However as an accountant I was only making $40k a year on my full time job. Even with a terrible skill set I made more than that my first year part time so decided in 2013 to go full time.
With the correct mentoring, being a student of the industry and consistently working on my skill set, I quickly became one of the top insurance agents in the country ranking #4 in the entire country in 2015.
I simultaneously started building my agency and although I’ve been through some ups and downs, I found a real passion for teaching others to succeed in this business and that allowed my agency to thrive. Today I focus on helping other people build and scale massive insurance agencies and my own agency has over 1,500 agents sell a policy each month and we will surpass $100 million in annual premiums sold in 2021.
This industry has changed my families life forever and I am always looking to give others the same opportunity I had.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would go on a food tour for sure. Some of our favorite places to eat are Gabes Downtown in Villa Rica, Canoe in Atlanta, Taqueria Tsunami in Marietta and of course the Marietta food Market.
We also love to escape to Blue Ridge, GA and enjoy time in the mountains at our cabin where we love going to Mercier Orchards, Black Sheep restaurant, and Cucina Rustica to name a few.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for Shawn Meaike starting Family First Life in 2013. My biggest mentors along the way that have helped me succeed are Mike Killimett, Marc Meade & Matt Smith. All have been extremely instrumental in my journey!
My biggest supporter has always been my wife Stephanie Wetmore. She’s been with me and supported my dreams since the beginning when we were broke as a joke!
