We had the good fortune of connecting with Poetic Pleasure and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Poetic, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
In life, there are some unexpected events that may occur beyond our control. As a mother, I have worked extremely hard to make sure that in spite of extenuating circumstances that arised, my children still have what they need. Recently, my children and I lost all of our material possessions in our home and even some loved ones. We were even displaced for a great length of time during this journey. One of the most valuable lessons I have taught my children is to persevere and push through even in pain. My children have been there each step of the way seeing my tears and hearing me cry even in my silence. Many saw us on a daily basis and had no clue of what we were experiencing. Even in the most frustrating moments as a mother not always knowing what would happen next, I would still show up every day for my children because they depended on me. Days in the hotel room and even nights on a shared blow up air mattress became depressing. The emotional, mental, financial, and even physical stability and comfort we once had was no longer our cushion. That left me with no other choice but to fully rely and trust God in what I thought was a mess.

One day my daughter drew me a picture. It was a picture of a woman standing in a giant puddle holding an umbrella. That woman was me. While this was happening, the woman kept her eyes on the big beautiful rainbow in the sky. It was in that moment, that I knew my children were being attentive to how I responded in this time of crisis. They were watching to see how I handled this situation. The obstacles that we faced during this time poured out quite heavily just like the rain in the picture my daughter drew. However, through it all I remembered God’s promise for us. It was the promise that kept me pushing when it was so easy to give up. Each day I woke up, I made up in my mind to choose victory. Although it did not always look like that, I taught my children to never give up. Watching me face each day as a full time teacher, graduate student and artist inspired my children to continue to achieve excellence.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Charleston, SC native Poetic Pleasure, who is poet, host, event producer, and creator, discovered her love for writing and the arts at the tender age of 5. Reserved by nature, poetry was often her voice that many never heard. She expressed herself vividly through the words she put on paper because the pen and paper is what comforted her. Her adult life began in Atlanta, Georgia where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at Spelman College. It wasn’t until she graduated that she realized that she wanted to pursue her passion for poetry even more. Poetic Pleasure decided to build a platform where poetry along with performing and visual arts promoted love, intimacy, and connection in romantic relationships and marriages in a healthy and positive way.

Poetic Pleasure gave birth to her very own productions that she also hosts called “The Erotic Poetry Show Atlanta” and “The Poetic Symphony: Love Edition” . These shows allow her to be artistically free and to fully be herself while also pursuing her passion for poetry and purpose to spread love. These stages created a platform where poets and artist could be comfortable to express their innermost feelings and emotions on love and intimacy through various forms of art, such as poetry, painting, dance, and music with other open minded individuals who had a true appreciation for the arts.

In addition, Poetic Pleasure created a poetry calendar titled Seasons of Love. This poetry calendar was created to share the journey of love, relationships, and different levels of intimacy such as spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical connection.

Recently, she has partnered with State Representative of Georgia El Mahdi Holly and created an historical annual event called King’s Day Café. This event was created to honor the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through spoken word along with other forms of art to convey powerful message to our youth in the community. Poetic Pleasure’s’ accomplishments has been acknowledged on a national level

Poetic Pleasure has been on various poetry stages throughout the world. She has performed internationally in Mexico, Jamaica, Aruba, and Panama. She has graced the radio waves of Atlanta’s V103/ 1380 WAOK Love and Relationship Talk with Joyce Littel, WRFG 89.3 FM, Across The Fader/Hip Hop Zone Radio on Power 357, Game Changers Radio on Mixx106Radio, and Instinct Radio.

In addition to performing and hosting, she is currently working on her romance novel, book of poetry, and creating a platform for children to embrace poetry, creative writing, and other forms of art.
