We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua & Brittany Opoku and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua & Brittany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We were born to be entrepreneurs, it’s in our bloodlines. Both of our fathers started businesses early and are still in business for themselves to date. So, for us it was truly the initial exposure of a lifestyle that required hard work and sacrifices but yielded great rewards, such as the ability to travel at young ages and seeing a parent at every practice, game, or concert. Therefore, when the idea of owning a Tattoo Shop came on the horizon, we both immediately did the research and ran the numbers on the profitability. I mean we are serial entrepreneurs and are invested in real estate and stocks. We own consulting and marketing firms, yet it was something about the Tattoo business that we just couldn’t ignore. Brittany was searching for businesses to buy during a pandemic, which was crazy initially, but we kept seeing the opportunity to buy and acquire businesses that were in distress.
Fast forward to the searching, research and negotiating…. we acquired our first Tattoo Shop, Nu Limit Ink. We recently celebrated our first year and couldn’t be happier with the results thus far. Building a profitable business requires a lot of work in the beginning but doing this together has been a true joy that we didn’t know we needed as husband/wife and parents of young kids!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Nu Limit Ink is a luxury tattoo shop located in Decatur, GA. We pride ourselves on providing custom tattoos for clients young and old. Every client that comes in immediately feels comfortable because we keep such a calm yet professional atmosphere that is different from most tattoo shops. Josh and I are at the shop all the time greeting clients, helping with ideas, and simply having fun while doing so. What makes this shop so special is that we are the owners, and we are not Tattoo Artists! This alone allows us to provide an experience that always puts the client first. We never knew how sentimental certain tattoos can be to clients. We’ve had informal therapy and praying sessions with clients when they were overwhelmed with joy about the result of their tattoo.
Owning a tattoo shop is far from easy, I mean you are dealing with artists who are sensitive about their “stuff.” We’ve been able to overcome a lot of hurdles by staying dedicated to seeing this business thrive, regardless of the present circumstances or an issue at hand. The biggest lesson we’ve learned thus far is to never let anyone or anything distract you from your goal. Recognize that, with each level of success there will be more problems, but you’ll also grow wiser and know how to handle more complex problems. You must trust the process.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The First thing is to EAT! Head over to the Juicy Crab, they have several locations to choose from. Next, you must do some shopping at Perimeter Mall, add some time for Zara. Now, one night should just be upscale fun so we recommend Pin & Proper near the Atlanta Zoo. Next, you need an evening of fun and music, and if you like beer then head over to the Tucker Brewing Co. For a clubbing atmosphere, we recommend Cru Lounge of Southside located South of Atlanta. Before you leave the city, you have to swing by Nu Limit Ink. We take appointments on Sundays!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One good book we would say that planted a seed for us is From the Trash Man to the Cash Man: How Anyone Can Get Rich Starting from Anywhere by Myron Golden. It really broke down the importance of creating streams of income – including the why and the how. This gave us our roadmap for creating generational wealth.
We would also like to give credit to our parents and family for the support around our gumption to be entrepreneurs. Without family, a lot of the things we do wouldn’t be possible. It’s the Village for us!
