Why did you pursue an artistic or creative career?

Artists and creatives face innumerable challenges given that their career path often doesn’t come with a playbook, a steady paycheck or any form of safety net. It’s definitely not easy and so we asked a few of the artists and creatives we admire to talk to us about why they chose to pursue an artistic or creative career.

I pursued my artistic career at the age of 6 I always knew i would be in the arts as a dancers. My career started at age six with ballroom and Latin, when later in my years i then auditioned for National School of the Arts which i completed my matric year. Well to say I chose to pursue an artistic and creative career would belittle the ideal behind that question. I didn’t choose an artistic and creative life by accident or by decision, it’s been in me for as long as I can remember. When I was five years old, I used to cut out little paper tickets and hand them to my family like they were about to watch something big. I pursued an artistic career because it’s the one thing that’s always felt natural to me. Music wasn’t just something I liked, it was how I expressed myself, how I processed life, and how I connected with people.
Coming from Bermuda, I also felt a deeper purpose behind it. I didn’t see many artists from where I’m from breaking onto a global stage, so it became bigger than just me. It became about representation, showing that our culture, our sound, and our stories deserve to be seen and heard worldwide. Read More>>

I always like to say that I never chose this career or path. It chose me. I also preach that it’s not my career, but a lifestyle. It’s literally what I eat, breathe, live 24/7. It’s not to say I don’t have a life outside my JOB, but the lines are blurred.
