We had the good fortune of connecting with Tynesia Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tynesia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because I’ve always been someone who values art and what it represents for a lot of people. I’ve always found it easier to express myself through various forms of art whether it’s drawing, coloring, painting and even dancing. I wanted to make sure I had a career doing something that will allow me to showcase who I am as an artist and as a person while still doing something that I love. Being a makeup artist allows me to showcase not only my creativity and the beauty of makeup but also the beauty of people.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a self-taught makeup artist from Birmingham, Al. I specialize in soft and natural glam but also love to get creative every once in a while. What sets me apart from other artists is my ability to be versatile with makeup looks. I don’t like to just put myself into one category so while I do specialize in natural and soft glams I am very capable of various types of makeup such as, bridal makeup, natural makeup, editorial makeup, special fx and more. I’m most proud of my growth as a makeup artist. Being a makeup artist is no easy task and there were many moments where I felt I wasn’t making the right decisions or just wanted to give up altogether but through it all I continue to fight for my dreams to come true. I got to where I am today through trial and error and applying what I’ve learned from my mistakes. It also took a lot of prayer and hard work to get to where I am and I’m far from where I want to be but I’m getting there and that’s all that matters. Nothing worth having will ever be easy to obtain. It will take hard work, sacrifice, commitment and discipline which are some things I still work on till this day. I’ve learned to be more open to criticism. I’ve learned to communicate on a more professional level when speaking with clients and/ or business partners. I’ve learned to trust and enjoy my own journey and not focus on anyone else’s because it only causes room for frustration, distraction and doubt to grow. You cannot rush greatness. I want the world to know that my brand is a representation of myself. My brand represents people being the sweetest most beautiful version of themselves and anyone who sits in my chair will feel that. My brand will be global. So stay tuned because SugarCoated Makeup Artistry is on the rise.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite places to visit in downtown Birmingham would be TopGolf which is an indoor golfing facility that is family-friendly and offers amazing food and drink services. Uptown in downtown Birmingham offers a variety of high end restaurants that offer wonderful food and drinks as well and is close to TopGolf. I also enjoy riding the electrical Veo scooters downtown as well. If you enjoy the club scene downtown Birmingham has an amazing bar scene. Casanova Bar and Lounge and also Safe Room Lounge are among some of my favorite places.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always did my own makeup as a hobby until my junior year of college. With the support and motivation of my friends I finally decided to take it seriously. One special person who inspired me tremendously is my friend Alondrea Tillman who is also a Pro Makeup Artist. My friends Alexiciah King and Heaven Sanders motivated and pushed me by always allowing me to practice on their faces so I could get better at my craft.
