We had the good fortune of connecting with Smith & Wyatt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Smith & Wyatt, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think the answer a lot of the artistic or creative types would give is “It is just who we are” or “It’s just in us” and thats exactly what we would say. For us it was never really a question. All we’ve wanted to do is write songs and perform them in whatever way we could do it. The question really at this point is “What else, if not music”?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It is hard to pinpoint exactly what sets an artist or a band apart from EVERYONE else since it can feel like it has all been done before. And even more upsetting, done better. It can be a liberating feeling to rid yourself of competition and unhealthy obsession by trying to be the best and just do it for the love of doing it. That being said, I believe we have a musical chemistry that is just undeniable. The second we started performing and writing together we knew our musical styles just intertwined so easily. Nothing was forced. We are proud of the fact that neither of us had to compromise our musical taste or style to make this whole thing work. There has been a lot of work that Preston and I have put in over the years. Countless hours of writing songs and investing in to those songs to get them out into the world. Any musician will understand this but people who are unaware to the process…. it’s hard. It takes planning, money and a specific vision for the song or the record as a whole. The hardest part for me is finding that direction. At the moment we are planning our first EP together as “Smith & Wyatt” and the biggest question we have at the moment is, “What kind of record do we want to make? Are we going to go all out with full band with big drums and electric guitar? Or if we are going to go the low key acoustic route. The songs could benefit from either so it’s a tossup. Just one of the many steps in planning to record and what type of band we are going to be in the long run. On the other hand, one of the big lessons we have learned in the process is… bands can evolve. The beauty of it is, we can do whatever the hell we want. It is hard to say what kind of impression we leave behind or what kind of story/image we want to have. We just want to make good music that we enjoy and, ideally, that other people will enjoy too.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
ooofff good question. Im a creature of habit. To my dismay, I do not explore a whole lot. We are based out of Marietta, GA so most of our suggestions would be for around here. Here are a few of the many great places to eat and drink. Drinks: Two Birds Taphouse – Marietta The Local Bar and Grille – Cartersville Redtop Brewhouse – Acworth. Food: Tasty China The Australian Bakery in Marietta square Hanging out: Dr. Bombays Piedmont Park North GA mountains are beautiful. Tons of state parks great for camping and hiking.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We of course would like to shout out anyone who has ever shown us support. Whether it be by listening to our music online, coming to shows, buying a shirt or anyone who has shown the slightest interest in our music we are very grateful and recognize all we would ever do is play these songs quietly to ourselves in our bedrooms if it wasn’t for the people who support us.
