We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I had a very good work life balance. Since the pandemic, all of that has changed. My real estate business has picked up during the pandemic and I think it has to do with the low interest rates for buyers looking to purchase a home, and the increasing housing costs for sellers looking to sell. Add on the diminished inventory and you have a very unique situation happening in the Atlanta housing market. Trying to find and maintain balance has become a bit tricky, but I am working on establishing routines and learning to shut off my phone during the evenings. I think that everyone has to find time to unplug from everything and enjoy thoughtless, technology free, quiet time. You also have to make time for your family to ensure that your business and time spent working is not interfering with the time and attention that they need. Because I thought that this pandemic was going to be temporary and not last as long, I didn’t make a point of creating much needed boundaries. I am now working on that to prevent myself from burnout and not tending to the needs of my family.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I wear three different hats, as a Real Estate Agent, I am an independent contractor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers. In that role, I find the most joy in assisting buyers and sellers achieve their real estate dreams. It is the role that I get the greatest satisfaction. What sets me apart is that for me its pure joy to help my clients. My passion is in helping people and when my clients get to the closing table, whether they are buying or selling, to know that you helped them to achieve that goal makes me so happy. I like to educate my clients along the way so that they realize that all real estate transactions are investments. As an entrepreneur, I get to make the tough decisions and create the company that I would dream of working at and with. It is tough but most rewarding to see your efforts transform into success. I enjoy speaking with people and assisting them with their finances so I focus my business on financial literacy to help other women achieve financial stability. This is my toughest role because I am requiring people to shift and make lifestyle changes that will ultimately lead to their financial success. As a certified Project Manager, I get to manage a project from initiation through deployment. I work in the IT sector as a Consultant and work with companies and organizations to fulfill their technology needs by spearheading projects. This role has allowed me to transform the practices and processes into my other roles. I have advanced to a Sr. IT Project Manager and I have adjusted with industry to grow and adapt to the changing methodologies. I take pride in communicating and reporting all aspects of the project status to the stakeholders so that there are no surprises. All of these roles really tie in together. As a PMP, I became focused on planning and timelines which was beneficial in starting my business. It also helps to ensure that my real estate clients contracts are followed through to the closings. And as an entrepreneur I get to assist people in making smart financial decisions that will ensure that they can build financial wealth for their families. I focus on financial literacy because it is one thing that I wasn’t taught and had to learn the hard way with a lot of missteps and mistakes that I made. Once I hit rock bottom, I was determined to get out of that situation and promised myself that I would do everything possible to avoid that situation again. Learning to save, increase and maintain a great credit score and invest in real estate and stocks requires lifestyle changes. After realizing that I was able to secure my future financially, I wanted to share everything I knew so that others could secure their finances too. I AM focuses on teaching people the blueprint of building and sustaining wealth. I am different because I truly work hard to help people with no other goal in mind than to ensure that they are successful in achieving their financial goals.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite restaurant is Gumbeaux’s which is located in Douglasville. It is a New Orleans cajun seafood restaurant with some of the best food you will ever taste. Another go to restaurant is Poor Calvin’s on Piedmont Ave in Midtown. Slutty Vegan, is a hometown favorite for Vegan burgers. After dinner, going to Cami Cakes for dessert is heaven sent. The variety of cupcakes will satisfy any sweet tooth. I like to shop at the Dawsonville Premium Outlets, Lenox , Cumberland or Perimeter Malls. I like to take guests to the Auburn historical district and visits to the Martin L. King Jr. National Historic Park and Atlanta Civil Rights Museum.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Too many people to name, but I will say my family have been my biggest motivators. They encourage and support me in all my endeavors and without them I would not strive so hard to be successful. I would also say that my Speaker coach, Cheryl Wood, motivated me to start Inspiring and Motivating (I AM) and she was instrumental in teaching me the fundamentals of speaking and monetizing it into a business. Lisa Nichols was the first speaker who I identified with personally, and it was in watching and listening to her that I realized that Motivational Speaking was actually a business and a much needed service.
