We had the good fortune of connecting with Shiyah (shae) Avent and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shiyah (Shae), can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is to focus on what is in front of me and maintain full faith in myself. I am still an upcoming model, but I wouldn’t have gotten this far without having full faith in me and focusing on my future. Confidence or trust in a person, thing or concept is the definition of faith. I have full faith in the career I am pursuing as a plus-size model. I have overcame a number of life-changing obstacles and challenges since I began my career as a model but I remained grateful for the opportunities I were presented with and never gave up. You cannot dwell on the past and things that are behind you, you must focus on the possibilities of success in front of you. Minor setbacks always have the possibility of leading to major comebacks!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It has taken me about two years to get to where I am today. I walked into this career completely blind and stepping outside of my comfort zone. Being a plus size model is nowhere near easy. You will face tons of backlash just for being plus size. My first photoshoot, we went viral. Many known influencers, celebrities, designers, artists and more reposted our content and we received mixed reviews just off the obvious fact we were plus-size. My motto throughout my upcoming modeling career has been bury them with success. I will keep pushing. I will never give up. I will be successful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Currently, I am residing in Richmond, Virginia. There are many hidden gems within this small city. I would definitely make sure we check out the Riverfront Canal Walk. This features unique art, restaurants and a view of the James River. This is best done during the daytime, during the week to avoid crowds. I would also visit Aces Sports Lounge. They have a 10/10 Sunday brunch. Live DJ, 10/10 food, great drinks hookah and more! Definitely a vibe you can’t miss!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I would like to shoutout to my daughter Laiyah. Laiyah motivates me in ways no one could ever. I know everything I do will affect her and my goal in life is to create a life for us full of happiness, positivity and success.

I would like to send a huge shoutout to Imani, the CEO of BigMuvasHouse LLC. I was presented with an opportunity in 2021 to travel from Richmond, Virginia to Atlanta, Georgia for a swimsuit photoshoot with no experience. From there, I realized Imani is not only a CEO but she wears many hats. CEO and mentor are just a couple to name. She has given so many opportunities to so many women regardless of their background and experience.

I would like to also shoutout my mother and grandmother. They have motivated me to keep pushing forward when I felt the smallest piece of discouragement.
