We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shelby, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work life balance isn’t the most perfect combo. I sometimes either get too caught up into work, or I feel guilty when I’m having too much fun. I learned that this is a normal feeling, and at times I can be too hard on myself over time management. Aside from running my own Makeup Empire, I also work TWO full time jobs to support my dream and my overhead expenses. My number one promise to myself was that I wouldn’t struggle if I didn’t have to, and so far having one foot in corporate America and one foot out has shown me a different type of balance I didn’t even know existed. You can do all things like having fun with friends, working full time jobs, running a business, but remaining focused on your overall goal is important. In this season of my life I am balancing more than I’ve ever imagined I would at 29, but watching my career unfold has been the most rewarding part of it all. Stay focused!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started doing makeup in 2014 as a stress reliever. Whenever I would feel any stress or pressure, I would sit in my bathroom mirror and create. I then noticed people would actually comment on looks and ask if I could do their makeup for various occasions. It was up from there! At least I thought so anyway. I hit what I would like to call a season of Artist Insecurity where I didn’t feel like I had what it took to become a big name in the beauty industry. However I learned that with hard consistent work and determination, my work would surpass my own expectations. I now service the DMV and Baltimore area frequently, as well as host classes and one on one trainings. My aesthetic is Natural Radiance, meaning my goal is to highlight your already beautiful features, not hide them. I love what I do, and I love the look on my clients faces when they look in the mirror the first time. Becoming Shelby the MUA was the best decision I’ve made, I wouldn’t change the story at all.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Richmond, VA has so many variations of fun! From fine dining to just hanging out at a local lounge! My favorite restaurant would have to be Mama J’s in the Historic Jackson Ward area OR Tipsy Crab located in Shockoe Bottom. Both places will send you into a food coma lol. As far as night life in the city, we love Hollywood Hookah! Best spot for good music and good vibes! Lastly, if you’re just looking to relax, Bells Isle is the perfect escape for a scenic view of the James river and an amazing nature trail.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give the biggest shoutout to my family and friends who continue to push me to become the best version of myself! Thank you so much for being my Golden spine!
