We had the good fortune of connecting with Shar Schmidt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shar, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I thought about starting my business, I was thinking about healing my own body from the inside out. After I was diagnosed with breast cancer, my body went through a lot. I knew that if I benefited from wearing crystals, there are so many more that would also.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from other crystal jewelry brands is the personal touch I give my jewelry. I don’t make anything until someone orders it, so they know what they’re buying was made for just them. I’m really proud of the fact that people can tell me about a particular area they’re struggling in & ask me if I can recommend a crystal for that. I love that! I want people to feel like I’m working FOR them – making a piece of jewelry that’s specifically for their emotional, spiritual, or physical needs. I want to be known for that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d definitely visit The Getty. I love art. The Iliad, it’s my favorite used bookstore! They have so many books, & there’s always a cat or two wandering around the bookstore. I’d take them to Botega Louie, they have some of the best desserts. I’d also take them to breakfast at The Pantry! Prior to COVID, I’d probably have taken them to The Troubadour for live music. There’s just so much I love, it’s hard to choose.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many of my friends & family encouraged me & have shown me enormous support! My sibling, Charity; my mom; my husband; my best friends, Maggie, Erin, & Kirstin; my sweet friend Selma Blair & her son, Arthur, for always wearing my pieces & believing in me; my friend Liz Carey for always showing support; & all of my cancer buddies for buying & sharing my work with others.
