We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanita Newton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanita, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew that I’d never be able to build the kind of wealth I know I’m capable of creating by exchanging my time for money. That’s finite – you have a limited number of hours in a day. I wanted to improve my quality of life – the quality of life for my son. I wanted to travel, workout and rebuild. My business gives me that flexibility.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a creator and singer. As a graphic and web designer, I help create brands and help others grow organically and authentically. As a vocalist, I have the privilege of singing soprano with Trey McLaughlin and The Sounds of Zamar. I also serve as Trey’s business and tour manager. During my first year of full-time entrepreneurship, I learned the importance of knowing my value and setting boundaries. They are essential in preventing burn out. I’m grateful that every challenge has helped me either discover new strengths or helped me to pivot and find a solution.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Augusta has an arts-centric pulse and often has a lineup of awesome events on the calendar! We’d start by grabbing dinner and drinks downtown. There are several locally-owned treasures to include the vegan, black-owned gem, Humanitree House and the Whiskey Bar (their lava-shrimp taco is delicious). Afterwards, we’d go hear one of my favorite bands – Tre Sounds (they’re awesome). If it was a Saturday, we’d definitely visit the market on the riverwalk. It features some awesome local produce and crafts. We’d top off the weekend with listening to some great live music at the Candlelight Music series Sunday evening.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m so thankful for my family and village that support and encourage me. They are amazing. Their love and strength continue to motivate me and when I’ve needed them most, they were there.
