We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Stunna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, how do you define success?
I define success as everyday you’re waking up and you feel happy about what you do. Another way I define success is putting your people into positions to win and to become successful. Success hits different when you can help and put your people into these positions. This is not always easy. But you have to have people around you who can hold you accountable no matter what position your in. It’s no fun when you are the only person who brings value to table. I like to have people around me who can challenge me and make me a better person.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m the creator & host of my digital talk series called “Outside These Walls,” where I’ve interviewed award-winning journalists, publicists, and entertainers. This series focuses on the life after college and the various hardships you’ll face while chasing your dreams and aspirations. Everybody has a story and a lot of time we forget who helped us along the way. “OTW’S” touches on important topics such as internships, creating connections and cultivating relationships.
I’m mostly proud about this series because in college they don’t talk about what’s life is like after college. A lot of people believe as soon as you graduate, you are suppose to have an high paying job as soon as you walk across the stage. I started this digital talk series May 8, 2020 as soon as I graduated from Morgan State University in 2020. Throughout the pandemic a lot of people asked me what’s next for Sean, at the moment I didn’t know because we was in a pandemic and everything was new for all of us.
In 2018, I started as an intern at WEAA 88.9 F.M. Throughout my journey I was learning all the ins and outs in the radio industry. Learning how to produce, pulling and creating sound with Adobe Audition, and learning how to run the studio board. It got to the point where I was always available if they needed a back-up board operator. Being a student of the game and learning from people in the game got me to where I’m today. At the age of 22, I was an on-air host/ producer for The Kickback on WEAA 88,9 F.M. When I first started it wasn’t easy because it was a journey and I wasn’t getting paid when I first started in this industry, I was a student and a part-time worker while working in the radio industry. Some nights I questioned myself and asked myself was I GOOD ENOUGH FOR THIS INDUSTRY.
Some of the challenges I have faced people not being supportive. A lot of people smiled in my face and said that it not doable and gave me a scarcity smile. Which made me become very isolated and more motivated. Due to all the negative things people have said to me. At one point it gave me some self-doubt moments, as I questioned myself am I good enough for this industry. I got depressed throughout my journey and lacking sleep due to everything.
I want the world to know it’s doable. Have supportive people around you and keep great people around. Clap for others while you waiting on your moment. Don’t compare yourself to other people on social media, greatness takes time and if it was easy then everybody will do it. Just be you, and create something that will last for ages. For an example what’s next after college a lot of people dont know that answer. That’s the reason why I created “Outside These Walls” because everybody is not going to graduate with an high paying job things takes time. A lot of people has gone through this same process so I try to get people in different industries to talk about their journey.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person who deserve some recognition in my story is my mother. My mother is from Kingston, Jamaica, if she did not come to America, I wouldn’t know what I’ll be doing. I owe everything to my mother because of all of her sacrifices she has gone through to make me have a better life. There wouldn’t be no ” Outside These Walls” where I talk to people in the industry about their journey from undergrad to adulthood. It wouldn’t be Stunna being on the radio or interviewing your favorite celebrity.
Another person I’ll say is all my doubters that told it wasn’t possible to get on the radio, do these high class interviews. It gave me a push to go harder. Sometimes we lack a sense of direction. So, it hard for people to be supportive because we come from a culture where they do not believe in you until they see you do it.
