We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Stephansen from The Broken String Band and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been fascinated by the ability to express exactly what you’re feeling in a particular moment and portray that feeling onto a canvas of any sort. Whether it be a song, a film, a painting, a novel, any authentically creative pursuit. It’s all so impressive to me. And then to have people out there who relate to that portrayal with their entire heart, people who you’ve never even spoken a word to before. There’s something so mysterious about that, expressing the inexpressible and it being understood by the world. I believe it is our innate connection to one another, and, in that way, it is our connection to god. Or whatever comes to mind when you hear the word god. Those of us who are fortunate enough to have the ability to create in that way, I believe we have the obligation to. The obligation to be vulnerable and authentic, and provide to the world something that it desperately needs more of: connection.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It really is all about the songs. We try hard to write really good songs; authentic songs that have meaning and depth. Songwriting is all about listening to the intuition inside of you, the same intuition that connects us all. That intuition will tell you what the song needs and where it wants to go. That’s probably been the hardest lesson to learn, and we’re still learning. How to trust in that intuition. How to listen.
As far as what we’re excited about, we’ve got something big coming. You’ll hear new music from us in 2023. Follow us on Instagram to stay updated.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d probably grab a Bird scooter and ride around too fast on the BeltLine. Eat some dumplings, see some music at The Earl, go to the Georgia Aquarium, maybe shoot some pool in a dirty bar. I’m a simple guy. To be honest, we’d most likely end up camping somewhere scenic. I know a spot outside the city where you can see the whole skyline.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am surrounded by people who constantly push me to be better. They know who they are, and I am so thankful for them. I’ve been reading Marcus Aurelius’ “Mediations” lately. It’s the kind of book that you’ll read 100 times and then read 100 times again. And again.
