We had the good fortune of connecting with Rosland Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosland, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since childhood, I’ve always considered myself to be passionately creative. I tended to march to the beat of my own drum, constantly looking for vehicles of expressionism. I was told by my teachers, family members, and various community members I’d encountered that “you have a great speaking voice” and that I needed to “use it in some way” ummm…..whatever that meant. Unfortunately, I never really had the opportunity to explore what a creative career using my voice could look like, or rather, “sound” like. Consequently, I felt resigned to do the “responsible thing” and work traditional 9-5 jobs, so I did. And while they definitely helped pay the bills, they just didn’t afford me the opportunity to meaningfully pursue the creative career that I craved. I wasn’t able to specifically carve out time to find myself and determine which pathway would lead me to the best creative outlet. I just knew I needed an outlet that would bring me the greatest sense of both happiness and peace.
I eventually discovered voiceover, which seemed like the perfect union of creativity and the use of my voice. But I couldn’t seriously pursue it immediately as a career because I was grinding away at my 9-5. However, when I was laid off, it was no doubt the catalyst I needed to fully enter this creative space and launch my own start-up, Rosland Martin Voiceovers, LLC. Besides that, my background is writing/editing, so I’ve always had a love for words. Transitioning from a writer/editor to voiceover artist allowed me to shift my focus from the love of the written word to its spoken form. I can also work with clients to help them find creative ways to connect with their audiences. I really dig that this career path allows me to have the best of both worlds as a voiceover artist and as a creative!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a professionally trained commercial voiceover artist. I narrate tv commercials radio spots, public service announcements, podcast intros/outros, corporate training scripts, and more! My warm, friendly voice can help corporations and businesses resonate with their customers and audiences by helping them promote their goods and services, tell their stories, and deliver their critical messaging with impact. The current trend that many clients/companies are looking for is the voice that sounds conversational and genuine, and I’m great at that! When working with my clients, I operate using a simple equation: “Your script + my voice can = something truly magical!”
I’m so very proud of myself for taking this leap of faith to venture out on my own to explore the art of voiceover, especially as it lends itself to so much creativity. I feel as though in many aspects it all essentially boils down to working closely with your clients and figuring out how you can provide service to them in the best way possible. I’ve learned that this is a such a competitive industry! I remind myself to stay positive, pack my patience between jobs or as I’m looking for meaningful work, stay true to who I am, know my worth, and remember that no one has a voice like mine!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow-there’s so much to see and do in Atlanta! For starters, we’d take a trek along the Atlanta BeltLine. There are many beautiful views, displays of street art, trails, and a variety of restaurants to choose from. Speaking of restaurants, because I’m a foodie, there’s a range of spots we’d visit. For instance, we’d go to Chops, Antico’s Pizza, Takorea, Grindhouse Killer Burgers, Southern Gentleman, and Krog St. Market.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t take my friend down the Buford Highway strip for all manner of restaurants that serve authentic cuisine, and to Atlanta’s Food Truck Park and Market.
We’d also kick it anywhere DJ Kemit is spinning because that’s a whole vibe! We’d definitely explore the independent film scene and, depending on the time of year, take in a few music festivals. For example, if my friend came to visit around Memorial Day weekend, we’d head to Piedmont Park for the Atlanta Jazz Festival, which is always really chill.
For sure we would have to venture into Little 5 Points to take in the scenery because it’s always interesting. We’d dig through the crates for some vinyl while we’re there because you never know if you’re going to come across that rare find! And of course, the High Museum of Art would be on our list of places to visit, too.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to FIRST thank the Most High God from whom all blessings flow, and for giving me the courage to take a leap of faith to venture out to do what I love! I’m believing Him for greater things to come! I want to thank my twins, Nina and Kyle—I love more them more than anything in this world! Together, they are the beat of my heart! I appreciate their love and support. Shoutouts to fam, Renward, Calandria, Alexandria, and Peighton. Special thanks to Theresa Grant, Michelle Edden, and SCORE mentor, James Rosetti. Very, very special thanks to Dr. Lynell Howard—she knows why!
