Meet Rhonda John | Home Cook, Food is Medicine Enthusiast, Philanthropist/Volunteer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rhonda John and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rhonda, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I LOVE to serve others by volunteering, but I’m a homebody so when a friend encouraged me to start a business, I decided that a home based business where I could donate the profits to whatever God lays on my heart each quarter would be both fulfilling and fun! But what should I do? I presented the question at my neighborhood Ladies’ Night Out, “What type of home business do you think I should start”? Well, everyone at the gathering knew I loved to cook and use real ingredients with a lot of herbs and spices (not only for the added flavor, but also for the many health benefits they add to your dish), and one lady replied, “I have no idea how to use herbs & spices”. And that was the start of My Symphony Seasonings!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
This is my WHY:
Over 30 years ago the poem (originally taken from a sermon), My Symphony by William Ellery Channing, made such an impact on my life that it was an easy decision to name the business after it upon conception in 2016. Since then the poem’s philosophy continues to be the inspiration for the charitable donations gifted from the profits of the business. My Symphony Seasonings fills Back to School backpacks with supplies for those in need, provides clothing, coats, luggage and toys for those in the foster care system, procures gift bags with new bedding & toiletries for the elderly in assisted living homes, purchases non perishable food items for MUST ministries, continues to sponsor students in Africa and donates to several missionary causes just to name a few of the giftings that align with the poem’s philosophy.
This is the WHAT:
What makes My Symphony Seasonings different from other blends? Buying the best ingredients from where they are native. While this method may not always increase the profit margin, it 100% increases the integrity of My Symphony Seasonings’ blends! Procuring organic herbs, spices and teas from places where they grow naturally insures that the soil produces a premium quality product. Being particular about buying indigenous ingredients and using them in our own recipes means you get only the best original blends to add flavor to your dishes at home.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have lived in Woodstock GA for over 20 years and I love our town! My favorite thing to do with friends is meet downtown for a progressive dinner or for one of the many concerts in the amphitheater, but we always start with a trip to the Leaning Ladder where we can try some great olive oil/balsamic pairings, get a drink (have you tried their sparkling water with Cascadian Wild Raspberry White Balsamic Vinegar? Delicious!!!), order a delicious meal made by one of their in-house chefs and of course browse the amazing gift shop and chat with Susan the store’s owner! Afterwards simply cross the street to shop at some of Georgia’s best clothing stores (most are local, women owned businesses).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
With a grateful heart, I owe the success of My Symphony Seasonings to my family who willingly shares ‘their time with me’ with the business, are my biggest cheerleaders and are always eager to taste the recipes I’m developing, and share their opinions as well as provide valuable market research for different demographics. Also, I simply could not continue to operate without my husband’s support, his expert business, IT and accounting advice and his generous encouragement for me to invest the time it takes to grow a successful business! And finally to my friends & customers who continually inspire me to provide premium quality, organic, proprietary blends of herbs, spices & teas for their own use and to give as gifts!
