We had the good fortune of connecting with Porshe Colts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Porshe, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting Breaking Barriers-No Boundaries Inc. was understanding my “why” and God given purpose in life. I’ve always been an outlier since my childhood and knew my journey would be different than most of my peers after my mother passed away. Life will present many obstacles. It is through my personal obstacles and challenges that the idea of helping girls break barriers officially began.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Breaking Barriers- No Boundaries Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit mentoring organization for girls ages 12-20. Breaking barriers is something you do not have to do alone. The purpose of Breaking Barriers-No Boundaries Inc. is to empower, inspire, and motivate youth girls to make positive healthy choices despite any barriers or circumstances.

I think what sets Breaking Barriers- No Boundaries Inc. apart is the personal testimony and journey of someone who has broken barriers. As a mentor, wife, Army Veteran, etc. I have a variety of knowledge, skills, and personal experiences. I own my story and walk boldly in it. Apart of my mentoring style, is sharing my story and not allowing anyone else to tell it. I think it is important for girls to own their story. We know that girls face many challenges such as body image, self-esteem issues, cyberbullying etc. today. We are aware that girls will make unwise decisions sometimes. With that in mind, we have a realistic point of view and create a safe environment for girls to express themselves and move past stumbling blocks. At some point we all will face an obstacle in life, but overcoming those obstacles is what is important and powerful.

I am excited about one of our programs “Lawanda’s Den”. Lawanda’s Den is a special program that is dear to me and is named after my mother. Lawanda’s Den is a program that aims to assist and find resources for young women, young mothers, and their children to achieve self-sufficiency. I am also excited about sharing information about Breaking Barriers- No Boundaries Inc. on Fostered My Stories Podcast with Host Shelena Tate this year. The FMS Podcast is an achievement focused podcast to counter the negative statistics surrounding Foster, Adoption, Orphan, or Underserved communities. I believe many barriers will continue to be broken.

With God, Faith, and determination I was able to press forward through life personally and professional. It was not easy at all. There were many sleepless nights, tears, and frustration, but I had to keep going. I’ve learned so many lessons along the way. My main three lessons are prayer, persistence, and passion. I’ve learned to pray about everything. I’ve learned that when you are persistent you are choosing to not give up. Many people decide to quit “too soon” or when things become hard, but I’ve learned being persistent is key. It’s important to be passionate about your life, career, or things you enjoy. My passion to fulfill God’s purpose for my life is what motivates me. My passion to serve others and mentor youth girls is a part of my calling in life. I’ve learned to have grace through it all, practice a lot of self-care, and continue to break barriers.

By starting Breaking Barriers-No Boundaries Inc., I am able to encourage, mentor, and help young girls not only break barriers but to leap beyond barriers. Breaking Barriers-No Boundaries Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that serves girls ages 12-20 in Columbia, SC and surrounding areas. I look forward to planning and collaborating with other Nonprofits outside of South Carolina to make a difference in various communities. We are open and excited to partner with other nonprofit organizations around the world. I want the world to know that any barrier (s) can be broken despite any circumstances.
