We had the good fortune of connecting with Patti Willig and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patti, what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are several important factors behind the success of my company. I love creating the designs for my customers based on their vision of how they would like a garment or other item to look. Because I can create original art myself, I eliminate the middle man and can give quick changes and corrections. This significantly reduces lead times. In today’s world customers are expecting responses within 24 to 48 hours. Personalized customer service is getting rarer and my customers appreciate working directly with the graphic designer. Many of my customers have become regular customers building a relationship with me and I a proud to call many of them friends.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I majored in Zoology with a minor in Chemistry. I started my career in the plastics industry. However, when I was pregnant with my first son I knew I wanted to have more time than my career offered at that time. I started by designing simple graphics for other companies that sold screenprinting and embroidery. I taught myself the important factors for successful designs. This made it easier for the screen printers to complete projects and that led to me being able to sell not just the art, but the finished garments and ad specialty items.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My family moved to the Atlanta area when I was just 12 year old. I love this area and am excited to have company come to visit. I like my out-of-town guests to meet my friends so I tend to take them to places where other people can join us. I have taken many people to see the amazing Laser Show at Stone Mountain. My cousin comes every few years to join me at a Georgia Tech football game. I love festivals and craft shows. It is great when I can schedule guest visits to coincide with Marietta’s Chalktoberfest, Stone Mountain’s Yellow Daisy Festival and Midtown’s Dogwood Festival.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentor was a man named Pat Montague. He taught me the importance of knowing my customers. My brother, John Herzog, helped me restructure my business.
My sister, Rene Lindsay, helped me get started and introduced me to the equipment I needed for the graphic design part of my business.
