We had the good fortune of connecting with Nakia Jade and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nakia, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I feel like it has always been a part of my life in some shape or form and when all else fails you go to what you love. In my darkest moments I have been able to create and helping other creatives have an outlet. I feel like this is my purpose, I didn’t chose this pathway I feel like it’s always been there I just had to embrace it.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Have you ever heard of an dancing poet? Well that’s me in the shortest of terms. Some people know me for my poetry and some know me as a dancer but most know me as both. It started off as inspiration for me but little did I know I was inspiring others along the way. Some topics wasn’t always easy to talk about but when you start to speak out and put your heart on the stage you realize your not the only person struggling, so your truly not alone. My biggest struggle is combining the two, poetry and dance on one platform together but I remember when people told me I couldn’t do both and to focus on just one art but crazy enough that is what sets me apart.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Of course they would have to link with my Crew D.N.A and probably grab some food at Timbuktu we would head downtown to check out all the beautiful art murals get some drinks at Whiskey Bar Kitchen or Blue Sky. On a weekend night we gonna go to Bar on Broad to see one of my favorite DJ’s Bassfusion spin some tunes and dance then head over to The Scene Nightclub. Some day time activities would include going to the dollar theatre on Washington Road, playing pool and running thru 2nd and Charles to get nostalgic running thru old school games, comics and movies. I would take them by the baseball field where it’s a beautiful nature trail hiding behind and a nice refreshing waterfall and grab lunch at Farmhaus Burger and walk along the Riverwalk. This trip wouldn’t be complete without hitting up the flea market and meeting up with my dance crew at the founder’s Juice Pizza shop on a Sunday afternoon for a dance session and some delicious oven baked pizza. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be here today without my mentor MS. Lucinda Clark the founder of The Poetry Matters Project , which is a nonprofit that works to increase the awareness of poetic community. I would also like to thank the support of my family who offers me insight and have shown up for countless shows and events. A big shoutout goes out to my crew D.N.A which is full of Dope Nu Artists that ranges from poets, singers, rappers, photographers, etc. as they continue to inspire me and keep me pushing everyday. I Most Definitely have to mention that I wouldn’t be here without the city of Augusta, my supporters and the Most High. Thank you
