Meet Molly Bailey

Today we’re excited to be connecting with Molly Bailey again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.
Molly, thanks for joining us again. Just to level set a bit for folks who may have missed our last interview together, can you briefly introduce yourself?
It’s a pleasure to be reconnecting with Voyage’s content partners! I’m Molly, a local artist and graphic designer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). My journey into design has been shaped by a deep passion for creativity and communication—two elements that, when combined, have the power to inspire, educate, and create lasting impact.
From the beginning, I’ve been drawn to the intersection of art and purpose. Working in a federal agency like the CDC has allowed me to use design as a tool for public service—translating complex information into visuals that are both engaging and accessible to diverse audiences. Design, for me, is more than just aesthetics; it’s about storytelling, problem-solving, and making meaningful connections through imagery.
Along the way, I’ve been honored to receive recognition for my work, including a national Addy Award and six local Addy Awards (American Advertising Awards) as a student, as well as several departmental accolades throughout my career. While these achievements have been gratifying, they serve as milestones rather than destinations—reminders of the growth and learning that continue with each new challenge and collaboration.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and creative minds who have influenced my journey. Each project, whether large or small, has been an opportunity to push boundaries and refine my craft. As I move forward, I remain committed to using design as a force for clarity, impact, and connection—always seeking new ways to bring ideas to life in a way that resonates with and serves the community.

Great, so let’s jump into an update on what you have been up to since we last spoke. What can you share with us?
Life has been full of change and growth since our last conversation. I’ve stayed busy in my role as a Visual Information Specialist at the CDC, where I recently had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Adobe. I was invited to beta test new software, with the CDC as their primary case study, and even had the chance to speak at one of their events. This experience reignited my love for public speaking—something I hadn’t realized I missed so much.
Beyond my work in design, I’ve also rekindled a long-lost passion: sculpting. As a local artist, I’ve started creating miniature sculptures and custom pet mugs, rediscovering the joy of working with clay after nearly a decade away from it. Surprisingly, it felt just like riding a bike—intuitive and deeply fulfilling. I’ve even experimented with oven-bake clay for fun, which, while infuriating for a sculptor like me, has been an entertaining challenge that keeps me on my toes.
But alongside these exciting ventures, life has also brought its share of hardships. In 2024, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and kidney failure, requiring both chemotherapy and dialysis. Receiving this news was incredibly difficult, but we are deeply grateful for the strength we’ve found in each other and the unwavering support of those around us. This journey has been one of resilience, love, and deep appreciation.
Through it all, I’ve found solace in unexpected places. A local barre studio in Decatur has become more than just a workout space—it’s been a sanctuary where I’ve built lifelong friendships and cultivated a sense of discipline that has been invaluable during this time. I’ve also connected with the thriving art community in Avondale Estates, finding inspiration and camaraderie among fellow creatives.

Life is often about tough choices – can you talk to us about your thought process, strategy or philosophy when it comes to making difficult choices or tradeoffs.
Life is full of crossroads, and making tough choices often means balancing logic, intuition, and the bigger picture. For me, decision-making is deeply rooted in perspective—stepping back to assess not only the immediate impact but also the long-term effects of my choices.
One of the guiding principles I rely on is alignment with my values. I ask myself: Does this decision serve my personal growth, my well-being, and my purpose? If the answer is no, I know I need to reevaluate. This philosophy has helped me navigate both professional and personal challenges, from career pivots to deeply personal family matters.
A recent example was the decision to step away from certain creative projects to focus on my mother’s health. As much as I love my work and artistic endeavors, I knew that being present for my family was more important. It was a difficult tradeoff, but I leaned on the belief that certain opportunities can wait—while moments with loved ones are fleeting.
I also embrace the idea that not every choice has a perfect answer. Sometimes, it’s about making the best decision with the information you have and trusting that even if things don’t go as planned, there’s always an opportunity to adapt and grow.
Ultimately, I see difficult choices not as roadblocks but as redirections—each one shaping the path in ways I might not fully understand in the moment, but always with a lesson to carry forward.
