We had the good fortune of connecting with Miriam Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miriam, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Music is an act of expression. It helps you to release emotions that you might not be able to release or feel comfortable doing. I feel like a lot of my music is just inspired by experiences and memories. Hidden emotions I never addressed, but seem to flow so smoothly through my music. That’s what keeps me going.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At first it was me going through the motions. I chose R&B as my main genre because it was a comfort zone. I’ve been singing all my life and R&B felt like the right genre to express myself in the way I felt I needed to. After time went on and I was able to start finding my sound I realized I like to mix things up. I want to mix R&B and hiphop, or dancehall and R&B, or even mix R&B and electronic. So many different sounds to tap into and it just became so much more to me. While making my own music I started tapping into the songwriting side of things and working on writing music for others, but I ended up songwriting for rappers. I was able to build and feel confident in the rap aspect of my music and channel that Into my own sound as well. Something I wish I had known when I first started is that making good music is just the base. There’s way more to this than o ever imagined and I’m learning as I go. Don’t trust everyone that seems to have a good intention. And my last piece of advice is always be willing to learn. Learn to record yourself, learn to do rough mixes, learn how to make beats. In the end it’ll make things 10 times easier.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For me I’m very introverted so going out to large spaces isn’t my crowd, however when I do explore and make my way outside I’m usually going to the studio. My personal favorite is Blue room studio. It’s beautiful and the setups are the best. The engineers are very helpful and I’ve actually made friends with a few over there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my dad. He’s been my biggest supporter even before the music. It’s one thing to stream and shoutout my music for me, but he goes the extra mile. Wherever he goes, doesn’t matter what’s going on, he stops people and ask them to check out my music. He researches opportunities for me. Helps get me resources I need. He’s a superhero without the cape. My success is his success because without him I’d be struggling.
