Meet Marissa Melchor | Master Cosmetologist/ Pro MUA

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Melchor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work life balance just recently changed last year when I was working a full time job and had to put it on hold due to my pregnancy. At first my clientele was low and I never had time to take clients how I wanted to. Fast forward to this year it increased. I sat out for a year and just took my clients while my daughter is in her newborn stage and I found the balance I wanted all along. Yes I have slow days but I love this work life balance. It does not seem like work when you love doing what you do.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Brushes of Beauty started when I was 8 learning how to braid. I loved doing hair up into college when I got discouraged after not getting enough clients. I then went to doing makeup and nails and found my passion in makeup. That’s when I thought of the name Brushes of Beauty. ( different beauty brushes I use ). I love making people enhance their beauty and feel good epically on their special days. Most people come to me for their birthday , wedding , baby shower, photoshoots, days they will remember and it makes me so happy they choose me to be apart of it and love the outcome. My background is social work so not only am I doing something I love to do , it’s therapy for me and also therapy for my clients to relax and talk / get advice if needed. At first I was lost working a 9-5 missing out on clients but then I got pregnant and had to stop working my job for a year. Since I been out from work , I went from 5 clients a month to 35 which makes me sooo happy. I have been trying to build my clientele up for YEARS. Keeping faith and God first got me where I’m at today. I have always had the entrepreneur mindset from making and selling jewelry to my moms coworkers, snacks in high school , hair, body oils, doing piercings , selling hookahs, I really have a passion for makeup and can’t wait to see where it takes me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestfriend came our week would look like this :
Monday – spa day we getting our nails, hair , wax , and doing some retail therapy
Tuesday – going to a taco Tuesday somewhere
Wednesday- depending on the weather a waterfall / picnic in the park / girls night at the house
Thursday – wine tasting
Friday – a candlemaking class or fun activity
Saturday -brunch
Sunday – church , reset , cook
Interesting fun things I like to do are self care / laid back cute things like what I listed above.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out GOD. My business will not be where it is today if I didn’t keep the faith and let God lead. I would also shoutout my clients for believing in me, trusting me, and spending their hard earned money with my business.
