We had the good fortune of connecting with MaKayla Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MaKayla, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Internal Joy (IJ) was created to address the complexities of holistic wellness and to provide a safe intellectual space for conscious development. The name, Internal Joy, emphasizes that joy is a state of being and should not primarily be contingent upon external factors and influences. The goal is to create a community of people and empowered networks to sustain spiritual vitality to promote emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Internal Joy currently offers a tailor-made program to assist participants in changing their dietary habits and eating behaviors. Our culture has been steered towards restrictive fade-based diets and supplements. Internal Joy works within a person’s current diet to address mental blockers and triggers, increase knowledge of foods, and provide the necessary tools to sustain a lifestyle change. In addition to this, Internal Joy hosts events, in collaboration with other clinicians, to bring conscious development tools and techniques to the community at large.

I am most excited about bringing conscious concepts and life changing techniques to communities which have been systemically traumatized and deprived. With limited options and knowledge, it can be difficult to navigate one’s life to the shores of optimum health and wellness. Empowering someone to take ownership of their health, working with the raw materials in their current environment, and seeing the “possibilities” finally illuminating within them…that’s my greatest motivation.

Business wise, I am here today because of two major factors: personal investment & familial support. I believed in this vision therefore I acted upon it. I’ve received a lot of guidance from my Father, who is also a business owner in addition to investing in a business coach, courses, higher education, and more.

I definitely did not have all of the answers starting out, especially with my background being primarily in the health arena. However, having a business has taught me so much especially how to overcome challenges. A few lessons I’ve learned so far are:
1.) Clarity: the vision for your business must be clear and concise. Ambiguity can stand in the way of progress and learning how to fine tune the vision of IJ is at the top. 2.) Evolution: allowing freedom and space for the business to evolve is critical. With clarity of vision, I’ve embraced that changes are inevitable with service delivery/mechanisms, program
content/deliverables, and the likes. 3.) Consistency: From content development to personal growth, consistency is the key.

What I would like the world to know about Internal Joy and it’s story is it will continue to evolve with time, just as I have & will. The genuine concern to see people in a better mental space in order achieve optimal health and wellness is top tier for me. I pray Internal Joy is instrumental in moving society away from the “lone ranger mentality” back to a collective one empowering communities for sustainable change.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a best friend was visiting the area, I would take them to the High Museum of Art or some kind of creative outlet. Atlanta is filled with so many artistic expressions, it’s only right. After that, I would take them to one of my favorite restaurants in the West End of Atlanta, Tassili’s for an amazing kale wrap. I would suggest we eat at Piedmont Park because so many festivals tend to occur there. After roaming around the city and showing them anything they’re interested in, I would end the night at a beautiful restaurant, another perk of Atlanta.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It would be hard to acknowledge just one person in this shoutout. Almost everyone that has been close to me in this lifetime has taught me something of value that has shaped me into the person that I am today. However, I do have to specifically acknowledge my parents, my brother Michael, and my Godmother Teresa for nurturing me as I came of age and giving me the space to grow and think freely.
