We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorgio Nim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lorgio, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It was not something that I set out to start. Initially, I just started sharing my art on social media and I eventually started getting multiple requests from people asking me where they can purchase my work. It got to a point where it was difficult to ignore the demand, so I set up my site and started selling.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My pieces are almost all entirely digital paintings. I’ll start off with a blank canvas, as one would a traditional painting, and slowly build up the piece layer by layer. I use my own custom brushes that I created myself.
The piece I am most proud of is one I did as a tribute piece to Basquiat. It was aout of my comfort zone and totally different from what I had produced up to that point, which made the final piece all the more satisfying.
The journey to me calling myself a “professional” is not clear-cut. I’d started doing commissions for friends, and as I got better I started attracting strangers and eventually corporations/businesses. I had to adapt and adjust how I approached my commission process once I started dealing with other businesses.
A major lesson I’ve learned is to just trust myself and my vision, don’t overthink and share my art, even if it’s not “perfect”.
My entire goal with my art is to create pieces that can withstand the test of time, pieces that will remain relevant for hundreds of years to come. That is what I aim to do with my art and brand.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I split my time between Canada and Burundi…so I’ll focus on if they were to visit me in my home country (Burundi). I would probably take them to eat a couple of local Cafe’s during the mornings, followed by spending the afternoon at one of the many beaches where we would have lunch by the water. Of that week, we would spend a couple of days outside the city at one of the beach resorts, and finally for evenings we would enjoy the nightlife that the city has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I was very isolated throughout my journey, so there was little to no input from people on the outside. Recently I’ve learned to share my creating with my mother…her encouragement and feedback is one I cherish most. When talking about inspirations, I have two main ones: Jean-Michel Basquiat and Leonardo Da Vinci. Both lived their life in ways people these days can only dream of; particularly Da Vinci. His life truly got me borderline obsessed with the concept of “The Renaissance Man”.
