We had the good fortune of connecting with Leidy Groomes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leidy, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
After the birth of my first child and the invaluable support of my own doula, I realized this work is what I was called to do. I love helping people do hard things, There’s such a need to walk alongside parents as they journey through their childbearing year. From pregnancy , labor, birth , and postpartum. There’s so much to learn and discover, and just 40 weeks to get it done!
The confidence gained through comprehensive prenatal education and compassionate, consistent care usually sets a solid foundation for new parents to feel empowered to be the best parents they can be for their new addition,
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Doula Leidy is a full spectrum doula support option. I can be your childbirth education teacher, as well as your birth doula and continue on supporting your family postpartum. This makes care that much more consistent and familiar. Doula support is not just for the “laborious” part of your labor and birth! Your doula walks along side you, answering questions and concerns, giving you suggestions for best practices that can help you have a more positive birth experience. I trust that when presented with all the information and resources they require, parents have the innate ability to make really good decisions for themselves, after all they have the BEST interest at heart for their health and their babies.
The Doula Leidy is inclusive, recognizing the need to support ALL families. I am also a native Spanish speaker and I am very proud of being able to reach the gap and facilitate conversations between non-english speakers and their providers to ensure they are getting the care they need and deserve.
As a relative recent transplant to Georgia , I struggled at the beginning with finding connections in the birth world. Doula work is big on reputation and word of mouth and no one knows the new girl! Through consistency and my willingness to help and support new families , I’ve extended my network, made some wonderful friends and have gotten immersed in our local birth scene. I am a homebirth midwife assistant, I collaborate with lactation consultants to transport milk donations to moms in need and I often back-up our other local doulas so their clients receive support and care when they are not available. If I can help, I will!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will have to take you out of the city and into the South side, as this area is my stomping grounds and the city still feels new and unfamiliar!
We can take the kiddos to the splash pad in City Center park in Fayetteville, cool off with a beer from line creek brewery , enjoy some good bbq from the Hog Pit and finish off with a double scoop cone from Scoops! I love this complex because everything is together (not to mention the library is right behind and we could always use a new read!)
If you have a little more time and enjoy a good nature hike our favorite spot is Cochran Mills park with an amazing waterfall and tranquil trails.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
South Atlanta Birth Collective – A group of birth workers all in the South side, beyond the city. Resources sometimes are not as prominent when you leave the perimeter, but we’re here and changing things! From doulas, Webster trained chiropractors, Pelvic floor Pt’s, lactation consultants and maternal mental health specialist all willing, and competently able to support mothers and their families as they trek thru pregnancy and postpartum,
