We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyra Liverpool and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyra, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Outsiders are unaware of the many different layers that go into each project. First, there is the photoshoot which requires hair, makeup, styling, production setup, creative direction, and getting THE SHOT. Next, it’s post-production processing which entails a lot of hours of sorting and editing. It is a lot that goes into each project and some photographers (like me) are a one-man band.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started photography as a teenager in high school, playing around with friends on my iPhone or a camera borrowed from school. It wasn’t until college that I became more serious about my craft. My friends were like “sis, you need to do this for real we see the potential”. Shortly after, that my big sister bought my very first DSLR camera. Then I really started to the potential for myself. Of course, it was not easy getting to where I am today. I had to learn, study and invest a lot. I even had to take some losses. However, I knew the obstacles I needed to face to show progress. Photography is something I love, and I was willing to do whatever it takes. I learned that there will always be room for growth, everyone’s art is different so try not to compare yourself instead be inspired, and to always give yourself grace. When it comes to my photos, I find it hard to categorize my style. I am experienced in a lot of different genres of photography and in my work some of those style blend together. I think what sets me apart from others is execution. I am very detail-oriented, so I like for my finished products to be very clean and sleek. I am really looking forward to seeing where I will land in the future. The industry is growing, and I believe I still have lots to learn on this Journey.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really appreciate the support and love that I receive from my family and friends. There has been some long nights and days where I drag them along with me to help create some dope art. Even simply helping me get my brand out into the world, they have been by my side step by step. I would not be the artist I am today without them.
