We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Best and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
With over 25 years of experience in the hair industry, I have gained extensive knowledge and expertise in various aspects of the beauty industry. As a hairstylist turned salon owner, I realized that collaborating with skilled stylists has taught me the value of teamwork and interaction. Two years ago, I fulfilled my ultimate ambition by establishing Natural Tresses Hair Salon. Our primary goal is to ensure that every client leaves feeling confident and beautiful. My motivation behind opening Natural Tresses Hair Salon was to create a welcoming environment where women can unwind and enjoy exceptional customer service, all while leaving feeling confident and beautiful.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Natural Tresses Hair Salon is a full-service salon for hair care. We specialize in braids, silk presses, weaves, locs, etc. Our clients trust us, so our number one goal is to focus on the health and integrity of the hair. We stay on top of the latest trends in the industry and strive to provide top-notch service to all our clients. What sets us apart from other salons in Raliegh, NC, is that we are old school. We don’t specialize in one area; we do it all. Some salons don’t shampoo hair with services anymore; we do. “It comes with the service.” Some salons make you purchase their hair before getting serviced by them.
Well, “we don’t.” We want everyone to feel welcome and catered to and get the whole experience of customer service. We also believe in giving back to the community, so the employees of Natural Tresses Hair Salon are always servicing the community by doing charitable deeds such as bookbags and necessity drives; we donate hair care services to women in shelters, and every year, we donate a scholarship to a student in the hair industry and much more. I got where I am today from the encouragement and advisement of my mentor, Mrs. Carolyn Covington. It was not easy financially to start my salon, but I learned that if you stay focused, be wise with your finances, and have faith in the almighty, you can do anything you put your mind to. I have learned to take one day at a time. Things don’t happen overnight. You must be patient; your dreams and ambitions will take off in God’s timing. I want people to know that anything in this world you try to achieve is doable, and you want to make sure you have people who support you in your corner and want to see you do good continually. If anyone comes into your circle with a negative outlook on anything you want to do in this life, please remove them fast.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting Raleigh, NC, for the weekend, I would take them to this ice cream spot up the street called “The Yard Milkshake Bar.” I love their ice cream, and it’s picture-worthy. I am a nature person, so we’d go to the rose garden, which is another spot for good picture taking, and then head over to Durham, NC, for the night and catch a show at Missy Lane’s Assembly Room; I love the music and the vibe there, or if they wanted some comedy because I love to laugh, I would take them to the Raleigh Improv or Goodnights.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely say my mentor Carolyn Covington owner of Ceo Hair Care has been an inspiration in my life. She not only was my first employer but became my own personal mentor and coach after so many years. She is a pioneer in the hair industry and has owned salons, spas, hair care lines, and now operates a successful nonprofit organization and much more. She has kept me under her wing and has shown me how to move forward in my own business journeys. I appreciate Mrs. C teaching me everything I know about the beauty industry without her I would not be the successful business owner I am today.
