We had the good fortune of connecting with Khulula and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khulula, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is the fact that I love and I’m passionate about painting. I love creating art. It’s all me being authentic and I think others see and feel my passion through my art.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art was born July 2021! I simply wanted to decorate my apartment with wall art. I went shopping but the pieces I loved were out of my budget. I decided I would try to paint my own art. I then purchased some canvases, paint and all the supplies I needed.
I love African masks, so those were my first attempts. In those moments, I realized how much I love painting. It brought joy and peace. The wall arts were beautiful. I hung them, took pictures and posted on my personal Facebook and Instagram pages. The feedback was astounding.
I painted daily and continued to post on my social media pages. Surprisingly, my friends and followers started purchasing my art.
Fast forward to September 2021, the Jamaica Gleaner (national newspaper in Jamaica, W.I.) and Smile Jamaica (the number one live morning tv show in Jamaica) called for interviews.
After those features, my art sold almost daily. At this point, I decided it was a business I needed to register.
My art is organic. The pieces are alive and full of love. All the pieces are African inspired. I’m proud and excited for my growth, which I know comes from the passion I have for painting. I’m very new to this art world, so I’m learning as I go along. I paint because I truly love to paint.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I moved to Atlanta in 2020, so unfortunately I haven’t been able to really enjoy Atlanta because of the pandemic.
I’ve tried the restaurant Slutty Vegan and that would be top of the list to take my friend. We would be exploring the parks, live concerts and a variety of restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and The Secret; The Power; and The Magic all by Robyn Byrne changed my life. These books inspired me on how to use my energy to successfully navigate life itself.
My sister, Shae is my biggest cheerleader. My dear friends, Lindon and Sahaii, who encouraged and also cheered my journey.
