We had the good fortune of connecting with Kassidy Jack and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kassidy, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from Vacherie, Louisiana, a very small town between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. I grew up in a household where education was highly valued. I remember my mom using huge dry-erase boards to reinforce what I was learning in school, and she would create mock tests to prepare me for the actual ones. This instilled in me the importance of preparation and dedicating my time and energy to achieve my goals in life.

I was also fortunate to grow up in a supportive household and surrounded by a family that always encouraged me. When I decided to attend Clark Atlanta University for my undergraduate studies, even though I had only ever been away for a few days at dance camp and had never been to Georgia, let alone Atlanta, my family didn’t hesitate. Their unwavering support has given me the confidence to pursue my aspirations, knowing that there’s always a group of people cheering me on.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I currently serve as the social media specialist for Shedavi, a hair care company based in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s definitely been a journey getting here. After receiving my Bachelor of Arts from Clark Atlanta University, I completed a fellowship at the Chicago Tribune as an Audience Content Editor. About two weeks before the fellowship ended, they offered me a role on the Audience Team, which I accepted. While working at the Tribune, I also served as a Digital Communications Assistant for the Black Girl Social Club.

Towards the end of 2023, I decided I wanted to shift career lanes a bit. While I love journalism and the art of storytelling, and believe God has more of that in store for me, perhaps in a non-traditional way, I wanted something that offered more creative freedom. So, I began job hunting, which was a different experience for me as it was my first time job searching as an adult. As a student with a competitive resume, job searching was easier, but competing against more experienced candidates was intimidating and did affect my confidence. However, I firmly believe that what God has for you will never miss you, and my current job was meant for me. I am learning so much, and it’s also helping me in my personal endeavors as a micro creator. So, it’s been great.

In addition to my role at Shedavi, I am also a freelance writer for Scholastic’s classroom magazines. I interned with Scholastic during the summer of 2021 and stayed connected with one of the magazine editors. I started out writing news briefs and editing audio and visuals to accompany the magazine’s graphic novel read-alouds. Now, I primarily write articles and am excited to have my first full interview feature going live this fall. This has been a complete 180 experience for me. I grew up loving the Scholastic book fair, spending all my parents’ money, and subscribing to their Highlights magazine. So, seven or eight-year-old me would have never imagined writing for that same publisher. Life is crazy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great question! We’d definitely have to do the traditional touristy things, like visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, the aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, and the Botanical Garden—I love the Botanical Garden.

For food and drinks, we’d have to visit Pasha, a Mediterranean and European restaurant that’s so good. Le Colonial Atlanta, which offers Vietnamese and French cuisine, is another must. For brunch, Toast on Lenox is a favorite—I always have a great experience there. And you can trust my recommendations; I’m from Louisiana, so I know good food!

One of my favorite things to do is attend festivals and events where people come together to enjoy good music or food—or both, which is even better. So, we’d have to fit one or two of those into the itinerary.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to my late great-aunt Cherry Mae. She always saw more in me than I saw in myself. She made me feel unapologetic and special in my own skin, flaws and all.
