We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Abreu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I would say that taking a risk is a very scary thing and it took me a while to really understand that without taking a risk you will never push outside of your comfort zone. Imagine a life where things are the same and safe you will never be able to grow and have experiences that shape who you are. Risk taking means taking a chance, having confidence in your abilities and being able to experience either success or failure but out of both we always learn a lesson and become better.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m Julia Anderson, an Afro-Latina, founder of JaBreu Beauty. Unlike many of my peers I was super late to the “makeup party.” In fact, I didn’t purchase my first real lipstick until I graduated college but when I did purchase it I felt like a gem! I felt that my lips were the hottest lips in the world and it gave me a boost of confidence. That is when my love of lip care began.
My mission is to help my Glow Getters see their inner and outer beauty. I want to inspire all Glow-Getters to spread awareness on topics like self-love, self-care, and mental health through my products. This is why all of my products are named after a word of affirmation because I want to create positive self-talk every time my products are used. Imagine saying “Let me put on my survivor lipstick today” I mean what an amazing flex! I want to remind my Glow Getter through this small gesture that they are EVERYTHING beautiful in this world. Positive self talk, self-esteem, self love, these are topics that are not often talked about in our black and brown community. This is why our brand actively supports various social causes that empowers all. We sell quality products with a positive message to enhance your confidence and self-esteem daily.
In my traditional career as a counselor I have dedicated my time to building platforms that serve and empower women and men.I draw on my 12 plus years of experience, empowerment, and mental health awareness to understand the importance of self love and confidence. So when I was called to give the beauty industry a much needed self-love lip read , I said Vamos, Con Dios!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well being from Philadelphia I love rating the best places in town. I am all about the ambiance and food! The food needs to be a 10/10 and the ambiance always needs to be safe and beautiful. I will start off with brunch at the West Ave Grille Restaurant then I would go to an escape room preferably the escape room in King of Prussia, following the escape room I would head to Giuseppe & Sons for dinner and finally eat the best ice cream at Scoop DeVille.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to recognize and shout out my amazing Husband Darnell. My husband supports my ideas and is truly my confidant in love and business. When I told my husband about my business ideas without a blink of an eye he said “DO IT” I think you will be great. When he said that to me I truly had a sense of relief that I was able to be creatively free and there is no feeling like that. We will talk for hours about business he will help me develop ideas into reality and for him I will always be grateful.
I will also like to give a shoutout to my amazing children Jayceon (10 years old) and Marnelly (11 years old) that have helped me organize, pack, and sell orders! I appreciate all your hard work and dedication into my business. I do this for you both to see that they’re no limits to what you can do.
Last but not least my sister Julissa , mom Tina, and my Glow Getters all the women and men that have bought from my business thank you for your support and love throughout this process! All your well wishes and love will never go unnoticed.
