We had the good fortune of connecting with Jozaida Morris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jozaida, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always knew since i was 13 what my purpose in life was. I’ve always loved glam and I knew I wanted to be in control of my life instead of somebody else being over me. I wanted to build something for myself that would give me freedom.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It all started in my bedroom. I was taking makeup models at my house for free in highschool & just began to post my progress, If you go all the way down to my business page @glamdbyjo you can literally see it all. I was already an assistant at my mom’s salon and slowly started getting my hands in to the work. As my clientele built, I made my booking website & started making my clients book by appointments only. Once i graduated highschool I moved out at 18 and have funded my lifestyle ever since solely off hair and makeup. I am now 20 about to be 21 November 26 & in my last semester of cosmetology school to become a fully licensed master cosmetologist. To the girls who think it’s impossible to fund their lifestyle of hair and makeup i would say, be consistent and be patient. don’t rush your growth and trust the process, and trust god .. A lot of people will not support you, at the beggining. Ironically those are the same ones who one day come around to needing your services. the cycle of life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend and I love having outings together now that we both are two adults with different lives. We enjoy activities like going to the fair, going out for some fun nights out in the city, we love trying new restaurants, shopping, self care like getting our nails done together! we love going out to Ponce city market i would say it’s my favorite place because it has everything there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give credit to two business women in my life that really set the path for me , these women are zaida machado bravo , my mother. the second woman is jovanni robbins who is my best friend zoey symone’s mother. I have seen these women work for other people, leave , and build up their success from the ground with NOTHING. No help, No funds, No guidance, Just put in the work and trusted god. These women in my life give me the motivation and the guidance I need to be the successful business owner i aspire to be. Zaida is the owner of Kathy dominican hair salon in stockbridge Ga, Jovannni is the owner of all about locs in Atlanta, Ga.
