We had the good fortune of connecting with JoVonn P. Jefferson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JoVonn P., what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
There’s a saying that I often say to myself, “God Made Me A Lot Of Things, But An Employee Is Not One Them.” This quote was the foundational thought process behind me starting my own business. I worked in cooperate America, retail, and as a teacher throughout my adult professional career, and at every stop there was always someone that I had answered too, someone that dictated when I was able to take a vacation, some one that made me felt guilty for calling in sick, or someone that was on a power trip because they held a certain title. Needless to say, my personality, and understanding who God had created me to be, did not allow me to make a career out of those positions. Either they got rid of me or I got rid of them. I’m confident that God created me to march to the beat of my own drum, and as result, being a entrepreneur was the only way to go for me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
JPJ Home Inspections, is a full service home inspection company that offers inspection services to buyers and sellers of residential and commercial properties. I cover the entire state of Georgia, and provide resources for home owners that may need home improvements. The home inspection business is a very competitive business, and success doesn’t come overnight. With that being said, I believe that one major thing that sets me apart, is that I genuinely show appreciation to my Realtors that trust me with their clients. Any quality home inspector understands and values the relationship that you must have with their Realtors. They are our blood line. Without their referrals, we are not allowed to be successful. When I came into this business, it was hard earning the trust of realtors, especially as a new inspector. I would go to real estate offices and pay to be on vendor their list, I would leave my card in barbershops, beauty salons, I was trying anything I could to get my foot in the door with no real success at all. I would get maybe 3-4 inspections a month for the 1st 4 months. At $350-$500 per inspection, I don’t think I was at minimum wage, but things changed one day. I was on my way to another real estate office, to pay to be on their vendor list, and a thought came to my head from when I worked for my mentor. I remember we were at a real estate meeting, which was a monthly thing, and we would often by realtors lunch and give a brief presentation about his service with the hopes of the realtors using us to perform the inspection. After one of these meetings, one of the admins asked my mentor , was he on Instagram and promoting his business on social media, and I remember him saying no because he didn’t really have the time. He was and still is a very successful Home Inspector. But when that though came back to me, it was like the windows of Heaven opened up. I pulled up to that office and never even went in. I sat in that parking lot and said that I would use Social Media to put myself out there. I seen what some of the realtors were doing to build their brand, and making videos, like mini commercials, this is right up my alley. I had played both college and professional basketball, and never been camera shy or lacked confidence with speaking. I started making informative videos about homes and inspection tips, and whenever I would get an inspection I would make sure to make a Shoutout video for the realtor and letting them know how much I appreciated them. This was my NICHE!….and the rest is history. I gained more and more followers and more and more relators starting contacting me to perform the inspections for their clients. My brand is rooted in Jesus, and saturated with appreciation for my realtors and clients. I started with 3-4 inspections a month, and am now doing that same number per day, and I give all the credit to my Faith and my desire to make my realtors feel appreciated.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First and foremost we would have to head to my church home, Linked Up Church (Powder Springs). the to my house to have some real Kansas City style BBQ. There are a few spots that I believe they must experience. Hopefully its during basketball season because we would definitely have to take in a Atlanta Hawks game. That next morning we would have get some Breakfast at Barneys or Atlanta Breakfast Company. The Roof Top At Ponch City is a must as well. All of my friends play or have played basketball so we would definitely get a hoop session in at hoop 360 in Alpharetta

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, is by far the most influential person in my life. He has guided throughout my entire life, and has never lead me astray. His specific purpose for my life along with being the perfect mentor every step of the way, has allowed me to have the success that I continue to have in the Home Inspection Business. Next is my beautiful wife of 20 years, Rolanda Jefferson, who is a business owner herself. She and my 3 children are my “WHY”. They inspire me to be great and set an example for them to follow and exceed now and beyond.
