We had the good fortune of connecting with Joslyn Hampton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joslyn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Working for other people throughout my whole life has never been satisfying. I was fulfilling other people’s dreams while my passions were deferred. I realized that I was nothing more than a number to the last company I worked for. I was unappreciated and replaceable to them. The major catalyst to pursing my dreams fulltime was Covid. I quit my job and started going harder with my first love, music, and other passions. I took a chance on myself to build my empire by following my dreams.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Hard to answer what sets us apart without saying what everyone else would say, but we have our own flare, style and perform with joy. I do this with the hope people feel that same joy while attending my shows.
I am proud of my strength and endurance, and I look forward to my future success.
How I got to Where I am today- Marty asked me if I wanted to write original music and start a band in 2015, I agreed, and we wrote our debut self-titled album Joslyn & The Sweet Compression. We recorded the album and then assembled the band. We put together a plan to start doing shows in small local markets and then branched out to nationwide gigs. Some of the biggest challenges came when Marty was diagnosed with brain cancer. Marty handled most of the business stuff, and I would help out where needed. When he got sick, I had to solely take on/ learn all the business side of things. I was thrown to deep end and had to sink or swim. I was also dealing with band members quitting and figuring out the finances. This time was so trying as I had a business to run and was facing the mortality of my stepfather.
Family support and support of the fans really helped me overcome the challenges. They were my motivation to keep going on this journey as well as understanding that nothing comes easy in this life and my unyielding passion.
I want people to know that with dreams comes challenges. If you truly love it, you have to fight for it, but be aware that sometimes you will lose. You have to get back up to WIN! This Band is a living testament to that!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I travel and work too much to get to hang out. Sadly I’m not able to answer this question

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My stepfather, Martin Charters (Co-Founder, Co-writer of Joslyn & The Sweet Compression, LLC, and Badass Guitarist) encouraged me to follow my dream of writing and recording original music. He was with me at the beginning and helped with all the writing and music as well as helping put together the band. Martin was a major catalyst in my growth as a musician and person up until his last breath in 2022. He helped me become the singer songwriter businesswoman I am today. I appreciate all I was able to learn from him while he was on this journey with me.

*Special shoutout to Ontavia Roulette, fashion designer extraordinaire for the alley-oop. I appreciate her for putting me on with Shoutout Atlanta.
