Meet Jolita

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jolita and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jolita, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success in the industry is being bold. You have to have a certain kind of delusion and an imagination that extends beyond the physical. For example, I changed my business page on Instagram to TV and Film MakeUp Artist months before landing one of my first gigs for makeup. I am extremely lucky and blessed to be a part of such a powerful project. Everybody on “WRK” by JID was amazing to collaborate with and executed their respective crafts incredibly. Part of my journey is having an inner knowing of being chosen, the other part is letting God guide the way. Without the Most High in my corner, my vision would be nothing, my hands would be useless. Expressing gratitude allows me to bind the physical and spiritual realm together and in return, I am rewarded. The greatest gift you can possess is being yourself, and that in itself alone is bold. The authenticity begets influence, influence begets impact. Impact begets change, and change begets innovation. If you’re reading this, I employ you to follow what pulls at your soul, regardless of outside opinions and voices. Remember why you’re here.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Although a creative career, it’s still a business. The very first thing that comes to mind is understanding the budget of a project. These production companies have the money, so don’t be afraid to ask. In the beginning, I had no idea what a minimum day rate was. Now, I do not accept anything less than. In other words, know your worth. As talented and as “popular” of a make up artist and esthetician that I was back in Columbus, Georgia, I was under valued. I served that area for over three years in my craft, and did not see the fruition I am reaping from Atlanta in less than a year. So proximity plays a part in success as well because the wrong environment can keep you from reaching your full potential. Columbus raised me, Atlanta is making me. The biggest lesson I have taken away from both cities and experiences is be careful on who you allow in your space and what you give your energy to. I know that sounds cliché, but not allowing any and everything in my aura gives me a creative edge. It is in this realm is where I become Jolita. By the time I got up here to Atlanta, people already knew me by my Coca-Cola photos. Some still turn a blind eye, others tipped their hats off. God forbid you to actually be pretty in the beauty industry. A lot of unwanted attention has come along from that alone. Nevertheless, I’m passionate about Jolita Lashes and all of the services I offer: threading, full body waxing, facials, lash extensions, and my first love, makeup. Having Indian and west Asian influences and techniques in my hands give me a distinct touch at the spa. I owe this to driven devotion on top of favor, with a little bit of luck. Outside of the spa, the nature of this industry is a beast. It is important to be multifaceted and genuinely well connected, or you will not survive.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Mama Jane’s for seafood, El Pan or La Cubana for Hispanic food, and West End Soul Food. We’d go on a hike whether that be Kennesaw or Stone Mountain and hit up The Painted Duck for arcade and games, cause I can’t golf. Not too big on drinking but I heard Bar Taco is good, and I would hit up the Perimeter Center with them as well.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Other than my mother, the one person who brings out my authenticity to the artistry is the lovely Lauryl Estelle. She is the reason I fell in love with makeup and became licensed. Not only would I consider her a mentor, but a sponsor. She took me under her wing, showed me the ropes behind bridal and production makeup, and continues to make an impact in the community. Another mentor I’m incredibly grateful for is Neetu Thakur, owner of Neetu Spa. To the woman who gave me the gift of threading and more, I thank you. To the woman who is taking her place currently now that I’m in Atlanta, Lubna Akbar, owner of The Body Wax and Threading, I thank you. To everyone in production and castings: Let Me Translate Productions, Resolve Media Group, Tyler Perry Studios, Swirl Films, Imagine Television, etc. I thank you. If I missed you, I love you, sorry.
