We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyn Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelyn, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou
This beautiful quote by Dr. Maya Angelou provides such a powerful message and embodies the mindset that I carry with me in everything I do. For me, my influence on others will be the most important thing I am remembered for. People can hear you talk daily, witness your actions routinely, and still get nothing out of it. When you execute your actions with intention and add value, you can make a lasting impact on someone’s life that they will never forget.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most of my legends (clients) tell me that the one thing that sets Legendary Health and Fitness (LHNF) apart from other personal trainers and/or gyms is the accountability factor. I am literally calling or texting my legends 2 to 3 times a day to help keep them on track. Most other trainers are not going to keep in contact with their clients throughout the day as much as I do. I also provide clients with a meal and fitness plan every week. The meal and fitness plan help them maximize their results because we all know you cannot out train a bad diet. Lastly, “We bring the gym to you” that is the motto and that is what I do. I bring the workout to clients’ homes, jobs, and etc. When I do this, it makes it more convenient for people to be able to work out without an excuse. In today’s society, most people actually don’t mind working out, they just do not like making a commitment towards a gym membership or the constant traveling back and forth to a gym. So, I would say I am most proud of being able to remove those obstacles out of people’s way. My military background is what opened the door for me in the fitness industry. I have been an active-duty US Army Soldier for about 18 years now. It has afforded me the opportunities to become a certified Master Fitness Trainer and Physical Fitness Facilitator via the military. I then coupled that with nutrition and scientific studies by getting certified at Body Design University and NASM. All of these things helped propel me to become a certified and accredited Wellness Coach and Personal Trainer.
This journey has definitely not been easy, honestly if it was easy I would not want it. Challenges and grit have turned me into the person I am today. I have also discovered it is what makes me relatable to my legends. I believe that real people want to deal with real people not perfect people.
Ironically, my biggest challenge is the very same thing that opened the door for me in the first place. At times, being an active-duty CPT has limited me from being able to fully run LHNF the way I would have preferred too. It can be a very demanding and time-consuming job and it used to only leave me with three or so hours a day to be able to train clients, which obviously limited my cliental.
COVID-19, the pandemic was and still is a scary time to live in the currently. However, with people being more concerned about their health and not leaving their homes as much, the fitness and nutrition industry has benefited which would include myself. People started to care more about what they put in their bodies and they wanted to be more aware of holistic eating and wellness. Most of the workouts became virtual sessions (MS Teams, Zoom, etc.). The results of the virtual lessons helped me to be able to balance my time more wisely and to be able to properly care for my legends while still working my regular 9 to 5 job duties.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay Okay, we are getting a little spicy now and I’m here for it lol. I would have to say my favorite spot right now, and for about a year, is Bar Vegan. I love me some Pinky Cole! She has literally put plant-based life on the map for the culture. At Bar Vegan you can eat very delicious vegan food and enjoy some amazing drinks, all while the DJ is playing the latest hits or the 90s R&B (that I personally love) in the background. Bar Vegan is a whole vibe, and it is at a super dope location. It’s located in the Ponce City Market, in Downtown Atlanta. I am a big fan of the hipster ambience that the Ponce City Market personifies. There is a pleather of things you do there, so really, it’s a vibe as well. At Ponce City Market you could stay there all day if you wanted too, which I usually would stay all day. At the market you can shop, eat, bar hop, and literally do anything. Seriously, I’m pretty sure there is a small amusement park in there. One of my favorite things about this location besides Bar Vegan, is that it is near the Belt Line. I am an avid bike rider who loves to be get out and get active, so this location is perfect for anyone who likes to get moving. I mean I am a trainer, so you know I was going to sneak in some type of exercise plus who doesn’t love a good bike trail.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is a tough one for me to answer, because there are so many amazing people in my life that helps mold me into the person that am, which is Jocelyn. I am considered a success story through these various people in my life. I had to narrow it down to three people. The three people who really pushed me to take Legendary Health and Fitness, LHNF to the next level is first, my handsome son Legend, whom I named my business after. Legend is my motivation for everything that I do. I wanted to create generational wealth for him and create a business concept that he could take over one day. This business quickly became my passion and our legacy the day he was born. My second motivation comes from my best friend Bee. Our friendship stems back from our younger years in elementary school. Bee truly believes in me and encourages me like no other person in my life. She is an integral part of what keeps my spiritual fitness aligned. We have such a great bond that in every major win and every emotional lose she has always been right there for me. Bee definitely supports me through it all. My third motivation is my real friend Shanon. She has been more than just my real friend but also a mentor to me in the entrepreneur world. Over the years, “not only has she put me on game, she has helped position me in the game”. Shanon believes in me and has afforded me the opportunity to be able to speak about LHNF on so many larger platforms.
