We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Wintons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I love any and everything hair, so why not start my own hair business? Thats it! That was the thought process.

On a serious note, this passion not only for doing hair, but entrepreneurship as a whole, has burned inside me for years. I’ve always NEEDED to be my own boss, set my own rules, and cultivate my own culture for others to be apart of. I NEEDED the space to be able to create everyday. I NEEDED the opportunity to fulfill my own dreams.

The thought process was clear; why not live doing what I love the most? Paving a life that offers me endless freedoms. It was an easy decision but the hustle and appreciation for my craft that I gained along the way is really what sealed the deal.

What should our readers know about your business?

I’ve been doing hair since I was in middle school and started doing others when I went to high school. I always said back then that I would own a hair salon. I went off to college (even though I knew I wanted to go straight to cosmetology school). I did hair on the side the entire way through. Graduated and worked a full-time job while doing hair in the second bedroom of my apartment. Switched jobs, got fired, and was faced with a tough decision.

I risked it all and went to cosmetology school full time and worked a full time third-shift job. I never slept but I was determined. I built clients up over the years and before knew it I had “regulars”.

I graduated cosmetology school and got the keys to my first salon suite that same day. The Pretty Lounge started off as a one woman show – it was just me grinding it out all day and super late most nights.

I always knew I wanted other stylists to join me, I just didn’t know how. I started an assistantship program that is till in place today. I mentor cosmetology students in my salon space as they assist me with clients. After the student graduates and passes all necessary exams, they can book their own clients at the salon. The program has been going well so far and I look forward to meeting new upcoming stylists ready to work on their craft and build clientele.

I had to learn early on that you cannot trust everyone with your dream. Some people aren’t going to be with you for the long haul and thats okay. You must keep pushing forward because your brand depends on it.

I pride myself on The Pretty Lounge/ “Pretty Poppin” brand. The atmosphere in the salon screams “YOU are pretty and we won’t let anyone tell you different”. You decide what pretty looks like for you! That may be a wig this week, and braids next week. Whatever the style, we have a stylist for you! We offer a variety of styles as we provide hair services across the board (braids, wigs, extensions, natural styles, color) and we also curate custom wigs. We describe our patrons as “Pretty Poppin” as they are pretty and confident about it!

We also sell bundles, closures, bonnets, hair growth oils, eyelashes, apparel and more!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

First and foremost I would like to shoutout God for keeping me during my journey. Anyone who knows my story, knows the rollercoaster it has been and I am so blessed to have the strength to always push forward, no matter what. All my strength comes from him as I know he will never give me more than I can bare.

Secondly, my mother, father and sister who always saw the vision and supported my every move. I would not be here today if it were not for their love and guidance.

Last but not least, I’d like to shout out each and every last client that has ever sat in my chair! Whether that be at my mommas house, my college dorm room, my 1st, 2nd, or 3rd apartment, yo aunt house, in class, my 1st suite, my 2nd suite….. Wherever. Thank you, thank you, thank you! My growth truly comes from the loyalty of my clients, many of whom I’ve serviced for over 8 years.
