We had the good fortune of connecting with Iman Brewton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Iman, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I truly just wanted to be able to make a living doing what I love and felt passionate about. My intention was to create something that was a reflection of me and my journey, even down to the name I came up with for my business. My initials are I.B. and my business is called IBDIVINE YOGA. Then, there is another spin on it. When you pronounce it, it can also sound like “I be divine yoga”. That aspect is for those that I connect with through my business. It is an extension of me but it goes beyond me and my name. When I work with people my intention is to guide them as they discover and use their own power and divinity, however that comes out or shows up for them. I found my power through utilizing the practice of yoga and I wanted to extend that to other people through my services.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been practicing yoga for 6 years but I have been certified for 2 going on 3 years. I have taught guided meditation, yin yoga, vinyasa flow and beginners yoga classes and I also do specialty classes. I created a yoga and twerk infused class called Bend It Ova. My most popular work is this class I created called, Couples Yoga. The idea to do this came to me in a dream, which was more like a vision of what was to come. In this dream I was teaching a yoga class for couples but I didn’t have to physically be there to do it. I followed through with the idea, put the class together and executed it. One of my videos from my first Couples Yoga class went viral. I held this class around Valentines Day this year. It recently gained a lot of attention and garnered over 5 million views in just a 4 day time span. This is what really helped my business take off. The classes are conducted virtually as well as in person. The intention of it is to assist couples with building and cultivating intimacy utilizing the practice of yoga as well as some other tools. I have been receiving a lot of good feedback from those who have participated. I think one of the things that sets me a part is that I am a living testimony to my own work. I overcame anxiety utilizing some of the same tools I’m teaching. The main thing that sets me a part is that I am Iman. There is only one me. I value being authentic as well as honoring my truth, intuition and creativity. I infuse my creativity and passions into what I do. I am most proud of how I created something that is genuinely impacting the lives of other people in positive ways. It started with me and the guidance I’ve received in my life but now my work is touching others and that is also what drives me to do what I do. I got to where I am by not giving up. It was not easy because there were doubts and fears about what I am capable of, what I can or cant do, how far I can go etc. I quit my job this summer before pursuing my business full time and that was scary at first for sure. The challenges were mostly mental but I overcame them by pouring into myself, making sure I cultivated self love through healing, affirmations and receiving support from my loved ones. I had to have faith that no matter what, everything was going to work out. It takes courage to have faith in something that you can’t physically see yet but you know it’s for you. I truly had to change my mindset to get to where I am now. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is knowing how to get out of my own way. I couldn’t allow things such as fear, doubt or worry stop me from taking action or being receptive to what I needed to get to the next level. The work itself of running a business can be overwhelming at first but it just gets easier the more I do it. I dont think that is the hard part. In my opinion the biggest hurdles are the stories we tell ourselves about what we are capable of. I just got to this new level professionally with my business but I have learned a lot in such a short amount of time. I will have to put it in a book to share later down the line because there’s so much. We think we need all of this prior knowledge on how to be an entrepreneur or run a business, its cool to read books and go to seminars but the lessons and gems are in the doing. It can be done. You just have to start. It’s like I’m no longer afraid of making mistakes. I’m just ready to find the solutions. I want the world to know, at the end of the day I am still human. I believe Nipsey Hussle said in an interview, “the difference between me and the next person is that I never gave up”. I think that speaks volumes and no matter how far I get in life, I still have human things to deal with but at my core I am committed to creating a great life for myself on all levels and then pouring and sharing from that cup.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to Piedmont or Sweetwater Park if the weather permits. These are two of my favorite nature/outdoor spots so far. I would take them on a hike at sweetwater or do some yoga, skate, relax in the sun on the huge green lawn at piedmont. When it comes to food and restaurants I would immediately take them to Jinya Ramen Bar in Buckhead. This place has the best Japanese ramen I’ve ever had in my life. I tried ramen at another spot and it just didn’t compare. The customer service and food is always amazing. I would also take them to Taco Pete in East Point. Some of the best local tacos I’ve had in Atlanta. I’d probably want to go to a Hawks game too because I love watching basketball live and in action. I am not a huge sports fan but the game of basketball has captivated me since highschool. When I was a cheerleader bball season was my favorite to watch and cheer for. There’s usually some dope events going on around the city as well such as festivals, art shows, Caribbean glow parties. etc I would find something along those lines for us to do. House in the park is one of my favorite events. Post Covid it may not be as much to do but I usually come across a ton of fun things on facebook or eventbrite. The interesting thing is, I am still discovering new things about Atlanta myself. That is one thing I like about it. You can be here for some time and still have new things to do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely have to shout out my family, ancestors and spirit guides. My family has been supportive of me starting my own business and doing what makes me happy. I am big on my spiritual practice and being connected to my ancestors and guides. Nurturing and cultivating my connection with them has contributed to me reaching new levels in my business and life in general. Also, the love from my sisterhoods/ friendships and the ways that they have shown up for me, just by being themselves, it gave me the strength and courage I needed to trust and keep going. The mentorship and services I received from a few amazing people throughout my life in regards to personal and business development. Some great books that I have to recognize that helped me immensely when i was coming into a pivotal point in my life journey are, The Power of Now, The Alchemist, Of Water and the Spirit and there are a few others but those are the main ones . Honestly, I can thank almost anyone I have come across in my life lol whether it was a lasting interaction or not it taught me something valuable about myself and contributed to me being who I am right now. Most of all, I have to shout out my clients. They have really been supporting my business, showing me a lot love and investing their time and money into my services. My business wouldn’t be thriving without them.
