We had the good fortune of connecting with Gerald Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gerald, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
You know it’s funny, because I never really thought that I would own a business at all. I wasn’t a fan of the idea of it all being on me. So when I started doing session after session and realized that I was already a business owner weather I wanted to realize it or not, that fear really lifted off of me. I realized that it wasn’t all on me, it was all on GOD. So my thought process of starting my company was “get organized!”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others in my field is i believe true to life, risk taking, images. Photography styles are just like fashion, there are certain looks that take over for awhile. As a designer you have to make a decision, do you build your foundation on fashion as a whole or do you build on the style of the moment? It’s the difference between Burberry and Baby Phat: One is an iconic brand that will last through every trend…and the other was…Baby Phat. I’d like to think that my clients will look at our sessions 20 years from now and know that “that aged well.” I’ve learned a couple of lessons that really sticks out. One of the most important ones is this: There are alot of people who are desperately looking for what you have to offer. My job is to be in front of them. One of the most liberating lessons that I’ve learned is this: Silence is an answer too. If someone isn’t responding, that means they are choosing not to.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friends are coming in town I’m taking to Little Five Points, Ponce City Market, going to Slutty Vegan, Atlantic Station, and probably Jackson St. Bridge because you have to get THAT pic before you leave!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to every person who has ever put action to their “crazy idea” and turned it into something. Shoutout to every person who has been brave enough to pivot from something that people had them boxed in as and try something else. You know I was musician for a very long time, and that’s what I was known for. I was terrified to not do that anymore, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
