We had the good fortune of connecting with Dymond Jewell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dymond, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Well ever since middle school I have considered myself an artist. I remember when I first discovered my artistic ability. I was in 8th grade and I drew a portrait of Kevin Hart and when I tell you I shocked myself, I was truly amazed because it turned out to look just like him. But, I didn’t take art serious until my senior year of high school. Then college came around and my first option for a major was Fine Arts. Unfortunately, that’s not what I chose, due to my own fears and other’s opinions on the best route for me. I finished my freshman year majoring in Criminology but decided not to go back because my heart just wasn’t in it. I spent 2 years trying to figure out what I was going to make of myself and during this time I lost my passion for art. Then something told me to pick up my camera, now I’m a full time artist. I chose what makes me happy, what makes me feel free, and I couldn’t be more grateful for this journey.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As far as photography, I’m more of a Portrait Photographer. Painting wise, I honestly can’t define or categorize myself. When it comes to painting, I create what I feel, but what sets me aside from other creators is my ability to combine both of my passions into one. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am now. It still isn’t easy, I sometimes doubt what my next move is or question if my work is good enough, but that’s when my faith steps in and those feelings get put at ease.

During this journey I’ve learned that mistakes will be made but everything will be ok. Keeping faith in God and the Universe will keep you grounded. Also, everything happens for a reason, some good and some bad, but the bigger picture is to learn from it. My goal is to inspire someone, whether that’s one person or a room full of people. I just want the world to know that it’s ok to choose what you love. You just have to believe and trust yourself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the city, our week would be full of fun, food & laughs. For food, I’d take them to either 9 cafe, Chickn, Fire Side, Shady Grove, or Showcase, just to name a few. There’s a variety of food options here in Pittsburgh. For chill vibes, I’d set up a picnic in “Blue Slide Park”, my favorite park with lots of picnic area. Or we can take a walk down the North Shore. If we wanted a nice view, The Overlook is a great place. For fun and meeting great people, I’d take them to meet my family. My family and I love to laugh and enjoy each others company. But if my best friend wanted to see the nightlife here in the city, I’d take them to either the Southside, Eon, or the 808 to name a few.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
From the depths of my heart, I’d like to thank my family for always giving me their support. I wouldn’t be where I am without their endless love and encouragement!

Also, to the people who show me continuous support, thank you! I’m truly blessed to have such genuine souls rooting for me. We are stronger together and there’s room for everyone to win!

Lastly, to my angel in heaven, I hope I’m making you proud. If only we had more time. I love you dad!
