We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr Tonya Stephens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr Tonya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my home health and NEMT transportation business stemed from helping people and seeing the lives that I touch everyday. When I started my business I was a Registered Respiratory Therapist for over 14 years. I saw a need within the community and I wanted to help decrease the statistics of readmissions of patients that were what we called “Frequent Flyers”. I built my business based on the knowledge that I had within the healthcare field and the passion that I have of helping others while in the home.

As a healthcare provider it was pivotable for me to change the way I looked at healthcare. Most individuals want to be home instead of in the hospital. It is my duty as a home heatlh agency owner to make sure all of my clients are taken care of within in the home while getting better. Everyday I am joyful because I have found my purpose and passion in loving what I do as a home health and transportation business owner.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a serial health care entrepreneur. I own a Home Health Agency and a NEMT transportation Company. I provide services for individuals requiring health care in the home such as grooming, feeding, light house keeping and other needs that cater to specific individuals. My business provide services that also help clients live independently with their illness or injuries. What sets me apart from others is the Transportation aspect connected with my home health agency. My Non Emergency Transportation Company provide transportation to clients needing wheelchair, stretcher or ambulatory vehicles. Also, within my home health agency I also provide Covid tests and Drug Screening.

What I am most proud of is the lives that I have touched now and during opening my businesses. I am proud to be able to take some of the stress off of family members

My vision of opening my own home health agency started in 2007 and it came to fusion in 2019. I was denied a promotion 5 times within the hospital I worked in and when I resigned, I opened the business and never looked back. Was it easy? Absolutely not. I thrive off of anything that is hard because if it was easy so many people would open this business. Dedication and hard work allowed me to continue to process.

What I have learned along the way is to NEVER GIVE UP. Always focus on your passion and your purpose.

Today, I am able to help others change their mindset so that they can open businesses such as home health and NEMT. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting I will take her to Vibez here in the city. When I do get time to hang out, I like to have a few cocktails and wings at Vibez.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out and recognize my husband and children. Their support and encouragement has given me the Will to continue to keep going
