We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorsha James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dorsha, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe that to be a successful entrepreneur one has to take risks. When I decided to work full-time on myURGENCYMD, I chose to leave a successful career as an ER physician with a guaranteed income. This impacted me, my wife, our livelihood, and our lifestyle. It was a very risky decision but not doing so would have hindered the company’s success. Complacency and the fear of failure keeps you stagnated but it also allows your competition to succeed in your stead. Sometimes you have to jump and grow wings along the way. As a result of taking that risk, I have been able to manage myURGENCYMD better and help thousands of people care for their physical and/or mental health through telemedicine.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
myURGENCYMD is a telemedicine company designed to provide telehealth services at an affordable price to those populations who need them most. As we know, millions of Americans are uninsured or underinsured and do not have access to the benefits that people with health insurance have, such as telehealth. I saw this first-hand working in the ER. I felt compelled to do something after seeing so many patients who came to the ER because they didn’t have health insurance, were unable to take off work to see a doctor, or didn’t have the funds to go to an urgent care clinic that required payment the same day. As a result, they were being charged high fees for the treatment of minor illnesses. They were basically using the ER for urgencies and not emergencies. I know most of those patients would have used an alternative, like telemedicine, if they had access to one. With myURGENCYMD, I am able to address that need for individuals and families by providing quality services at an inexpensive price. I’m proud of that, and I’m very excited about our recent partnership program with HBCUs. This program is open to all HBCUs but Tennessee State University in Nashville was the first to take advantage of it. We are providing telemedicine services to all of their students. I’m also proud that we have partnered with the Music City Community Court CARE Diversionary Program to provide telemedicine services to its participants as well.

I want our brand to be equated with professionalism, education, and quality services. I want people to know that I am passionate about providing convenient, affordable, and time-saving physical and mental healthcare to populations that need it most. I pride myself on the company having a personal touch where our customers don’t feel like just another subscription. We also take pride in the outreach that we provide students — providing them with medical information to assist them in making good choices. To help with this, we recently launched a cartoon called “The House Call” where I discuss common health concerns in an edutaining way. It’s been fun being the animated version of Dr. Dorsha.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite places in Atlanta to go and see things:

Mary Mac’s Tea Room – who doesn’t like some good old fashioned southern cooking?

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial – it’s always a good idea to learn more about our past and pay homage to one of our brightest leaders

The World of Coca-Cola – I would take them there because it’s interesting to see the far reach of the product and just how intriguing its story is.

National Center for Civil and Human Rights – Another top pick and can be seen on the same day as the World of Coca-Cola tour.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Rachel, has been extremely supportive. She’s my #1 cheerleader. Before becoming a judge, she was a successful entrepreneur and practicing attorney. Her expert advice has helped me become a better entrepreneur. As my spouse, she provides love and care and challenges me to be the best I can be. I probably wouldn’t have embarked on this adventure if she wasn’t in my ear telling me that I could do it.
