We had the good fortune of connecting with Diarra Dumornay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diarra, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is passion. My passion for hair began at a very young age, as I watched my father operate as a barber in the salon he owned. I’ve always admired the salon, I loved the environment and how it brought people together. I often have moments where I can remember how it felt to see so many people from different walks of life come together in one space and get along like one big happy family. The salon is where so many vent, so many laugh, confidence is built, it’s not only about the hair. I have always been passionate about having a space just like that where I could bring people together. That passion alone is why I started and continue to grow my business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a full service salon called Glam Headz located in Charlotte, North Carolina. We offer a wide range of services aside from hair services including lashes, nails, waxing, and brows. There aren’t many full service salons, or many salons with multiple stylists anymore. These days most stylists are in suites. I believe this sets Glam Headz apart from others. I am most proud of the clients responses to the customer service of my employees and the environment of the salon. I have always worked very hard to offer great customer service so to know clients are still happy is a blessing. The journey was long but well worth it. When I decided I wanted to leave college and pursue my dreams by going to cosmetology school, I knew exactly what the outcome would be. I knew one day I would own a salon. I worked as a front desk associate at Hilton Garden Inn full time while going to school part time. My day started at 5am and ended at around 10pm every weekday, and i wasn’t off on weekends which sucked. I felt like a zombie, but I had an end goal and was determined to reach it. One day I planned to save up enough to pay my bills for 6 months, quit the job at the Hilton, and go to school full time so I could graduate earlier. I did it! I wrote it down and made it happen. Before you know it I was graduating cosmetology school and testing for my Cosmetology license. I’ve been climbing the ladder ever since. After graduating i went for salon ownership which didn’t work out well. I wasn’t ready, so I worked in two salons and a salon suite before finally going for salon ownership again. This time around things seem to be working out great. It’s definitely not easy, but I would tell anyone with a dream not to let anything stop them. I learned that anything in this world that you may want, you can have with consistency, being persistent, staying focused, and being passionate about what you want to do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents are my rock. My father has blessed me with the opportunity to experience his passion which allowed me to discover mine. My mother is my back bone, she has always supported every decision and encourages me to keep going no matter what.
