Meet Devonnea Leyes | Product Photographer & Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Devonnea Leyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeVonnea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
If I’m being honest, when I first thought about starting my own business, financial freedom was definitely a driving factor. But what really motivated me wasn’t just about building something to ‘hustle’ for the sake of it. To me, hustling is about merely surviving—just getting by. I didn’t want to create a business that felt like a constant grind. Instead, I wanted to build something that would allow me to thrive, something I could nurture, pour my heart into, and be genuinely passionate about.
For me, that passion has always been in videography. It started in high school when I first picked up a camera. I immediately realized I had an eye for capturing moments in a way that felt special. It wasn’t just about taking photos or videos—it was about preserving emotions and memories that could be cherished forever. As I continued to develop my skills, I decided to take a leap and expand into photography. That leap turned into a journey where I could truly express myself and connect with people through my work.
So, while financial freedom was certainly a goal, it was always secondary to the desire to create something meaningful. I wanted to build a business around my passion, where I could provide value to others and continue doing what I love every day. It’s about combining purpose with the freedom to live life on my own terms.
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets me apart is my meticulous attention to detail and my ability to tie everything together in a way that makes sense and feels cohesive. My specialty lies in planning and organization—ensuring that every photoshoot is carefully crafted to tell a specific story. From the moodboard to the final image, I make sure everything aligns with the theme, creating a visual narrative that resonates. I focus on every element—poses, colors, locations, lighting, props, and clothing—so that the shoot evokes the right emotions and communicates the message clearly. Each detail is part of a larger picture, and I take great pride in making sure every piece fits perfectly.
That said, I’d also say my personality plays a big part in what makes my business unique. While it might sound cliché, I genuinely believe my personality brings something special to the table. I’m vibrant, observant, nurturing, and open-spirited. I thrive on collaboration and always work to create a trusting, supportive environment for my clients. I know how to read the room and adapt—knowing when to bring energy and enthusiasm, and when to step back and let the moment speak for itself. That balance is key to making every experience feel personal and authentic.
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. It’s taken years of personal investment, hard work, and sacrifice. A lot of my progress has come from time-blocking and learning to prioritize so I don’t spread myself too thin. It’s about staying focused on the things that matter most, whether that’s my craft, my clients, or my personal growth. One lesson that’s stuck with me is this: ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of my incredible mentors, fellow photographers, and the community I’ve built along the way. Their guidance, feedback, and inspiration have been invaluable to me.
Through all the ups and downs, I’ve learned that it’s essential to prioritize what truly matters, communicate effectively, and—perhaps most importantly—understand that it’s okay to say no. Setting boundaries has been a game-changer in maintaining my balance and staying true to my vision.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, and I wanted to give them the best time ever, I’d start with something meaningful—taking them to church. I think there’s something powerful about connecting with the community, grounding ourselves spiritually, and setting a positive tone for the day. After that, we’d head to the bamboo forest trail—nothing beats the peaceful energy of walking through towering bamboo, feeling like you’re in another world. It’s one of those hidden gems that makes you appreciate nature in its purest form.
Next, I’d take them to a dance class. I’m all about movement, expression, and having fun, so I’d make sure we find something that’s energetic and full of life—whether it’s salsa, hip-hop, aerial silks, heels, or even something new we’ve never tried before! It’s the perfect way to let loose, laugh, and make unforgettable memories together.
Finally, to wrap up the day, I’d treat them to an unforgettable dinner at a highly-rated, 4-star restaurant. We’d indulge in amazing food, experience some unique flavors, and enjoy the kind of conversation that makes time feel like it’s standing still. I’d make sure we find a place that has both incredible ambiance and a menu that leaves us talking about it long after the meal is over.
This mix of spiritual grounding, adventure, creativity, and great food would be the perfect way to show my best friend an unforgettable time!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my biggest shoutout goes to God. Without Him, I wouldn’t even exist, let alone have the gifts and talents I’m blessed with today. His grace and guidance have been the foundation of everything I do. As it says in John 15:5, ‘Apart from me, you can do nothing,’ and I truly believe that without God, none of this would be possible. But with Him, I can do all things (Philippians 4:13).
Next, I have to give a huge shoutout to my incredible support system—my boyfriend, my siblings, and my parents. Their unwavering belief in me, their encouragement, and their love have been a constant source of strength throughout this journey. I wouldn’t be where I am without them by my side.
Lastly, I want to express my deepest gratitude to my mentor, Mecca Clarke (@meccaclarkephotos), for her guidance, wisdom, and constant inspiration. She has truly helped shape my path in this industry. I also want to shout out some amazing photographers who pour into me and help me grow—Alfred Turner III (@phlxmedia), Doche Adonis (@adonisdphotos), and Blake Martin (@mrblakemartin). Their support, knowledge, and camaraderie mean the world to me.
I’m beyond thankful for each of you. I know I’m never alone on this journey!
