Meet Dawn Winston | Master Cosmetologist, Instructor, & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Winston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My business creates a safe space for people in the community to be there true selves unapologetically. I have created an environment where you can get services that will build confidence in people of all ages and all backgrounds. They come to my business not only for the services I offer, but also for the bonds we unintentionally build together through conversation, networking, and fellowship.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to incorporate my talents into various art forms and use those different avenues to navigate a lifestyle that not only makes me happy but also allows me to share that happiness with the world. I am most proud of my commitment to myself to always chase my dreams no matter what obstacles I may face. I got to where I was professionally by servicing family members initially. Born to a mother who was a former addict, serving time in the federal penitentiary, and a father whom I did not know; I was raised by my Uncle and Aunt who were parents to one biological son, and four adopted children before also taking on the task of raising myself and my brother. The four adopted children were biracial with African American and Samoan descent. My brother is also biracial. There were so many different hair textures in one household that I was fascinated in the beauty of the different variations. I began seriously styling hair at age 13. By the time I was in college as a young adult I was servicing almost an entire campus including the school chef as well as other staff and administration. I began building my clientele , working two jobs: one at a beauty salon and the other at a virgin hair boutique where I would market myself to potential clients to drive them to come to the salon. I’ve faced many challenges while being an entrepreneur, but one of my biggest takeaways on my journey is that “You are only as good as your mindset.” I want the world to know that your background does not define you, but designs you. I want my brand to be recognized as a brand for the person that never stops believing or dreaming no matter their circumstances.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots in the city are the Belt Line where I can meet other artists and people who share similar interests and also introduce myself to new ideas and people. I enjoy brunch at Toast on Lennox and for a nice evening I like to walk this hidden gem in Fayetteville called Trilith and do shopping or grab bites at some of their amazing restaurants.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to recognize Mrs. Patricia Terry, owner of Touched By an Angel Beauty School and also Mrs. Tawanda Ifeoma Philips, Owner of Cosmo Kit Solutions and Classes
